Lion King 3D Tops Box Office

Written by SkulShurtugalTCG :

As this weekend at the box office proved, The Lion King  still has the magic, even after seventeen years. The film was re-released in 3D, and topped the domestic box office. Early estimates placed the film as having grossed at least $29,300,000 by the end of its beginning weekend, making The Lion King now the seventeenth highest-grossing film in the US, and the 28th highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.

This weekend marked the first time since the re-release of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi that a re-released film has grossed the most money in any weekend. That was 14 years ago. Many critics attribute this achievement to both the film's popularity, and the fact that it is a traditional-animated film.

What does this mean? It means, simply, that there is hope for animation after all. With so many people willing to spend time and money to see a film they've probably seen hundreds of times, it shows that they are perhaps willing to see a brand-new film of the same quality as well. As of right now, Disney is actually considering going back to traditionally-animated films, at least part-time, due to The Lion King 3D's success.

This is the first time a traditionally animated film has been converted to 3D for any media. The 3DVD and 3D Blu-ray wilil be released mid-October.

If you want to see the film, hurry! It will be pulled out of theaters after September 29.

I'm not suprised, Lion King is like the best Disney film ever.(at least in my opinion lol)
I went to see it the first day it opened, the intire theater was packed, lines almost going out of the doors. Ands its a big movie theater. I just got the last open ticket and and I joined everyone at the end when they all stood up and applauded as the credits came up.It was one of the best nights ever in my life. I was born four years after the Lion King orginaly came out and I have always wanted to see it on the big screen, like others it was one of my dreams and when I first heard that it was coming out in 3D I literally fliped out! I didn't really care too much about 3D movies, but of course I wanted to see TLK in 3D :p kuz im like that. I loved seeing it and I agree with Paxis, I might go see it again too. :D
I'm so glad this finally woke Disney up and I hope they go back to the good old days:D

well if they are going back to the orginals they would make a few seaquels of the old films like fox and the hound lady and the tramp the lion king 3 (if its the lion king 1/2 then it would be called that not the lion king 3)

Heck yeah! I'm also planning on going back and seeing it more than once, because it's that fantastic. Seeing The Lion King on the big screen was a big dream of mine, so I'm sure anyone can tell how excited and satisfied I was with going to see this. Disney did it right this time with creating TLK in 3D; it was incredible! I certainly hope along with everyone else here that they'll focus on 2D animation more, as well as bringing this quality to other classics. (Though not to go overkill on 3D for every film, because I can already see how that may lead to rushing through classics.)

As far as Disney movies are concerned, you just can't top The Lion King, no matter what you do. Even it's sequel, Simba's Pride, pales horribly in comparison. From the comments here, I'm not the only one who thinks that Disney as a whole should go back to the good stuff and bring back 2D animation with good movies that have better stories and heart!

I'd like to see it if I get a chance. Maybe now with all that money they can give us good 2D films again. Instead of the (censored) they show on the disney channel now :/

Lion King is one of the best Disney films ever made. It reaches its full potential. I absoutly LOVE this movie with a passion. I'm so happy that it came to theaters in 3D. It is one of the best movies Disney had ever made. Despite the fact that it was created in 1994, this film should be shared with the next genertaion of children. I still cry when I see Simbas heart broken face after loseing the person that means the most to him. This moive by far is my favorite disney film. I can't get enough of it.!

The 3-D effects were fantastic in The Lion King.

I don't know if they will ever gonna play it here or not. If they play it here, I'll go to the cinema and watch it. Classic is usually good and it's just for a nostalgic thing. Besides, I'm sure it's gonna be fun.

And yeah, it's a good thing to hear its success over there.

On top of what Brander said, it was additionally made so that it pertains to the progression in animation through 3D which allows new viewers of the youthful generation to enjoy. The 3D aspect also increased the realistic thrill to it as well as added a new experience to it to allow old viewers to enjoy it despite the storyline already being familiar to them.

A classic is a classic no matter how you look at it but if you want to ensure a re-release of a classic to be successful, it must adapt a bit to the current era of viewers so that the change is small to allow the classic to keep its main elements but large enough to re-excite viewers both old and new.

I'm enthusiastic to see its success and perhaps reveal that traditional animation can survive in this era and beyond only if it is willing to adapt to the current time.
