Personality- Gainell has always grown up wanting to impress his parents and did all he could to live up to their expectations. He tries his best to go above and beyond to be recognised and accepted. Like his mother he has a caring nature but he's more troubled due to mixed responses that his father gave him. As a result he can become stressed quite easily and rather insecure, this is only made worse by his brother Kahn being praised so much. Gainell enjoys helping who he can and acting as a good role model. But he despises how his brother one ups him all the time and how his parents are oblivious to how much of a suck up he can be.

History- As the first born cub to Kiara and Kovu Gainell believed he had to live up to the role of a king. From a young age he would take responsibility for his actions and followed each order he was given. Unlike El he was given very little freedom and followed a military like set of rules. Whenever his father showed the slightest sign of disappointment he would shut himself off from the world. To him if he couldn't do right by his father then he was a disgrace and so he beat himself up for it. But he didn't feel threatened truly until Khan came along. That was when he began to push himself further to hold on to his promise of the throne.

But what seemed to make everything better was when he ran in to a leopardess called Penda. He adored her personality annd fell head over heels as for her at first glance. To him she was everything he ever dreamed off even if she wasn't a lion. He would often ask El about her so he could swoon the leopardess. Gainell was nothing more than a love sick puppy unaware of how his brother Kahn spoke ill words about him. 

Upon reaching adulthood he sought out to ruin Kahn's chances of being king. So when his younger brother left to make peace with the hyenas he began to seek his father's approval. He would take on extra tasks just to impress him and become more popular with the pridelanders. Gainell also warned the prideladers about his brother's ties to the hyenas and how he may do nothing more than destroy the peace in the pridelands. Due to this many of Kahn's supporters came to his side which only fed in to his growing ego.

Following Kovu's death Gainell had much more support than Kahn. For obvious reasons this led to him being crowned king. Though he knew this was a drasti decision he exiled his brother and any of his supporters. He believed nothing could go wrong until he found out about Penda aiding his escape. This triggered a state of paranoia which seemed to send him insane. He would often be seen talking to himself as if someone was there just two months in to his reign. His weakening mental state made him lose many supporters who began to side with his half brother Lapin, who he didn't know existed until a week earlier.

After being rightfully beaten in battle Gainell later stepped down from the throne. Shaken by how he lacked control over his own mind he put up no fight. Gainell apologised for all the trouble he had caused. As a result Lapin took pity on his poor soul and has him become a cub sitter. Later he apologised to Penda for how poorly he treated her and once he made his peace he settled in to his new life. He has also formed a bond with Sutar and has since adored every moment he spends with her.
