History:
When she was very young, not quite weaned, her clan leader secretly banished her and her brother out of hate for rivalry. He soon died without milk, but when Rafiki found her (he had not became shaman of Pridelands yet) he took her in, raising her to be strong, independent and loving. In time, Amara-Esala became very strong and smart, able to understand things well beyond her years. When word came from a rover (a wild african dog with no family) that her clan of birth had been brutally attacked, Rafiki brought her to help him. When most of the work was done, he left it "in her capable paws". He returned to his old home, while she stayed to attend to the two worst hurt: her mother and the clan leader.
Since it had been nearly seven years since her exile, none could have imagined that her mother could recognize her. But, indeed, when she entered the cave, her mother near exploded from happiness. When her tramautic story was told, the healed clan turned on their extremely old leader. Killing him, they accepted her as leader, caalling her "Forgotten", since none but the mother remembered. A few years passed, she married Bakkar, had two children and ruled.
But the day came when her mate attacked three cubs: Takari (Scar), Zira, and Redasa. She defended the prince, taking him home. After learning her protection of their son, Uhru and Ahadi told her she could stay stay there until Bakkar returned from hiseight-month banishment to the Land of Rogues and Thorns. (Originally, Uru had sentaced him to two months, then gave Amara permission to edit the punishment, so Amara declared it to be EIGHT, not two months. In that time, she bore Shenzi. And when Bakkar never returned, presumed dead, she ruled alone. But after a few years, when she began to really miss the Pridelands, she left the clan permanently, choosing a dear friend to rule, with her older son to be second-in-command.
Her beloved daughter had grown into an adult by this time, and was displeased with her mothers decision to leave and live in Priderock. So, she stayed with the clan, killing the replacement and paralyzing her brother. When this news came to Amara, she refused to believe it, until she saw her daughter's eyes no longer were light grey, but souless eyes with evil bore into them. After Scar's death, she and her daughter fought themselves, but it was a losing battle for Amara-Esala. Her heart wasn't into it, she found no wish to kill her daughter, regaurdless of the evils her little girl had inflicted. She threw her paw across Shenzi's face, knocking her to ground. Then she started to sob, backing away slowly. "If you die, it won't be by my paw!" she proclaimed, swishing her tail to the lionesses, allowing them to take chase and do away with her daughter.
Those who knew Amara took pity on her, and somehow convinced Simba to let her stay. She was thankful to their kindness, but her heart was broken. She couldn't eat. Couldn't sleep. All she could do was think about her little girl and wonder what she had done wrong. Barely a week after Simba's great victory, Amara-Esala died from exaustion and starvation, heartsick over what had become. This was the only hyena to be burried underneath the acasia tree, a sacred tree of the gods. And her reign of kindness and love was remembered by the surviving hyenas, and thus began (in Queen Kiara's rule) the "Peace of Amara-Esala", the treaty which ended all bloodshed between clan members, and the enemy lines between lion and hyena.
