Species: Tyrannosaurus Rex
Personality: Fun-loving, innocent, and downright huggable, Chomper is the polar opposite of other sharpteeth – the only behavior he seems to share with them is that he can't stomach green food. Since the other dinosaurs are off his menu (not that he could hunt them very well anyway at his size), he feeds on the Great Valley's abundant supply of insects. He seems particularly fond of bees (which he says are “spicy”) and dragonflies, although certain kinds of worms and beetles have also been seen to be among is favorites. More than once, Chomper has gone out of his way to help his old friends avoid being eaten, even when it meant putting himself in danger or compromising family loyalty.
{{{SPOILER WARNING}}}
History: Chomper is first introduced in The Land Before Time II: The Great Valley Adventure when he hatches in the Great Valley. Despite their initial terror, Littlefoot and the others soon warm up to the little guy, who together with his parents helps them defeat the egg thieves Ozzy and Strut. Ultimately, Chomper and his real family return to the Mysterious Beyond.
Chomper is not seen again until The Mysterious Island, when Littlefoot and the gang find him and his parents living on an off-shore island (how the sharpteeth got there remains a mystery). By this point he has somehow learned to speak English, but for all that has changed he doen't forget his friends. Instead, he protects them from his parents and from a rival sharptooth which has taken up residence on the island as well.
In the cartoon series, Chomper is back on the mainland and living in the Great Valley, where Ruby brought him to keep him out of Redclaw's jaws. The leaf-eaters tolerate – and in some cases enjoy – his presence so long as he feeds only on insects. Even his close friends, however, can get a little nervous when he comments that he's getting hungry, so even he hates to admit it when his appetite is on the rise. Despite the misgivings of others, he seems to identify more with herbivores than with his own kind; he has even been seen to forget to speak Sharptooth when appropriate, unlike others who would make the opposite mistake and lapse into their first language.
Struggles: In The Mysterious Island, Chomper finds himself trying to balance his friends and his family. He does his best – eventually succeeding – to dissuade his parents from eating the gang, and provides the herbivores with food which he knows they'll like even though he finds it repulsive. In the TV series, he often finds himself faced with some measure of prejudice, particularly from Cera's father, Ali's herd, and Doc (although the worst of this last one is more rooted in Chomper's own expectations of prejudice than any actual persecution from the Lone Dinosaur himself).
Family: Chomper has a mother and father who are almost clarivoyantly dedicated as parents, seeking him out and recognizing him as their own despite never having seen him outside an egg before.
Friends: Although he gets along well with the whole gang, Chomper is the most closely associated with Ruby, the only other one whose family lives outside the Great Valley and also the only one who eats non-vegetable food (she has been seen to dine on shellfish at times). Despite his close friendship with Littlefoot and co, their families occasionally distrust him; in Episode 8 in particular, Petrie's siblings constantly fear that he may eat them or their mother. Littlefoot's grandparents, in contrast, trust him completely.
