Personality: The term “sharptooth” is used of all carnivores in the Land Before Time series, but there's one who ultimately claims the name for himself. The tyrannosaurus rex from the first movie, he is the epitome of everything dinosaurs fear in a predator. Savage, relentless, and powerful, he is death on legs and seems to have a particular aggression towards Littlefoot and the others. Despite the fact that Littlefoot is no bigger to him than a fun-size candy bar, Sharptooth will let nothing – not thorns or rocks or even and earthquake – stand between him and his prey. In fact, it often seems as though he isn't even concerned with eating Littlefoot or the other young dinosaurs, as he tries to stomp them underfoot more often than he actually tries to get them in his mouth. One explanation for this is presented in the contemporaneous book, The Land Before Time: The Illustrated Story delves a little more into his personality, revealing that he is extremely vain and given to revenge, suggesting that his pursuit of Littlefoot, Cera, and anyone connected with them all stems from the damage his eye suffered when Littlefoot (probably unintentionally) smacked him in the face with some thorny vines. He was most likely sadistic even before this, as hinted in the book when it speaks of “evil joy” in his heart as he sniffs the smells of plant-eaters wafting from the Great Valley.
{{{SPOILER WARNING}}}
History: Sharptooth only appears in the first movie, but he more than makes up for that by his menacing presence and behavior. He first appears when he attacks Littlefoot and Cera in a swamp, going so far as to follow them into the midst of a gigantic thorn bush. His efforts to eat them are interrupted by a violent battle with Littlefoot's mother, ending in her death and his fall seemingly to the same in an earthquake. He survives a plunge deep underground, however, and continues to hunt the two young dinosaurs and their friends as the movie unfolds. At the end he almost finds a way into the Great Valley, but Littlefoot and the others manage to knock him into a deep pond or lake where he drowns.
