History: Born into a rough world as the last hope of his herd, Littlefoot might be said to have not gotten off to a promising start as a youngster. His life, already made rough by having only his mother and grandparents on whom to depend, was nearly shattered by a sudden separation from his grandparents in an earthquake and the brutal death of his mother in a fight with the Tyrannosaurus, Sharptooth. Lost, grieved, and alone, Littlefoot had nothing left in the world except his mother's gift of a single treestar, a token of the hope which lay ahead for the dinosaurs in the paradisial Great Valley.
Personality: Despite his rough beginning, Littlefoot is not without resources. A born (hatched) idealist, he is full of questions and can nearly always see the possibilities of a situation – and particularly the good in other dinosaurs – where most others see only hopelessness. He is also a clever planner and a natural – if somewhat unpracticed – leader. He can get a bit harsh and tempermental at times, but when everything is on the line, he's almost always the one others look to for guidance.
Most of the time, Littlefoot can be trusted to keep his cool. However, there are a few things which can get under his skin: in The Brave Longneck Scheme (episode six), he gets pretty mad about Rhett lying to Ali, and like anyone else he may lose it if someone insults his mother (as seen in the first movie).
Among fans Littlefoot has proven to be by far the most popular of the cast (with Cera as a close second), often featuring prominently in merchandizing and references to the movie in books or reviews. Many parents and writers have treated him as a role model for kids since the movie’s release.
Family: Having lost his mother at an early age, Littlefoot is raised by his grandparents (on his mother’s side). He was part of a clutch of three eggs, although two were broken by unspecified causes. His father, Bron, is still alive, but rarely seen as he leads a migratory herd. Littlefoot also has an adopted brother, Shorty, who lives with Bron.
Friends: Littlefoot is quick to make friends with just about anyone, although the group from the first movie remain his most noteworthy pals. He and Cera are considered best friends, although he tends to have fewer conflicts with Ducky and Petrie. He was also the first to accept Chomper in The Great alley Adventure, and established a close “Mud Brother” bond with Mo the Opthalmosaurus in Journey to Big Water. Other notable friends of his include Doc, Ali, and the Rainbow-faces.
Seen in: The Land Before Time and all subsequent materials.
Quote: “Oh, you can’t quit now. What if the Great Valley is just over the top of these rocks?”
Trivia: At first the writers planned to name Littlefoot “Thunderfoot” (likely a takeoff of “thunder lizard,” the English translation of “brontosaurus”). This was changed when they found there was a character in a children’s book who already had that name.
