That's a long news, so be sure to click "Read more"!

Universal released its first CGI film this month, and it's...a huge success. Despicable Me is probably the biggest surprise this year, as it generated 118M$ in only two weeks (yes, more than Princess & The Frog during its whole lifespan), while it was produced (in France) for a very small 60M$ budget.

Universal - Despicable Me

It seems nowadays every company is doing better than Disney...the complete opposite of what happened in the 80-90s, when every animated film would fail, one after the other, when there wasn't written "Disney" on it. Any logic about that? A big part of the success of that film, though, is due to the fact the trailer was shown along with Toy Story 3. (obviously, that helps!)
Anyway, this means you will see : two Despicable Me sequels, a TV series, at least 2 or 3 direct-to-video sequels, and a dozen more CGI films from Universal during this decade. (I'm such an oracle!) After all, they needed a new money-maker franchise to exploit to the very end, now that Land Before Time, An American Tail and Balto are officially "dead" to them.

Dreamworks is also doing fine, with the new Shrek 4 and the previously released How To Train Your Dragon, with a third (yes, THIRD!!!) CGI film planned this year being "Mega Mind". I can't tell you how much I enjoy all these success stories, while I absolutely dislike the CGI films, especially the ones produced by Dreamworks : this only encourages them to make more and more of the same, again and again. (sigh)

Now, what about Disney? While Pixar is doing wonderful with Toy Story 3, and has more sequels planned (Cars 2, Monsters Inc 2, and rumors about A Bug's Life 2 too), Disney is currently making a direct-to-video film based on a...Pixar film.
It's a spin-off of Cars, named "Planes" (how original!)  Mmm, Disney making Pixar stuff...this mean the opposite will also happen, right? RIGHT??

Planes Disney Toon Studios

This is made by Disney Toon Studios, the studio behind the new "Tinker" direct-to-video CGI films. (and many of the best DTV sequels from Disney, including Bambi 2 and The Lion King 1 1/2 - but they've stopped 2D animation)

Talking about Tinker, Disney also plans to make a live action Tinker film based on the famous character. Talk about franchises...

And don't forget the two new Tron sequels to the original (and failure) 1982 film, who has gradually gained popularity over the years.

The best news coming from the Disney studios, though, is that a new 2D animated film project has FINALLY been green-lighted for pre-production!  This means that, after the July 2011 new "Winnie the pooh", the next 2D film will not appear before 2013 or 2014 (at least) Huge gap...But still comforting to know they still have some plans for traditional animation.

There's finally a trailer of the winter release, Tangled :

I think the trailer clearly aims at gaining an audience more close to Shrek, than The Princess & The Frog "classic" approach. I like the style of the film though (clearly the best graphics I have seen for a CGI film!), but can't say more with it.

A couture company, has started a brand of clothes, named "Dope Tales"...Remind you of something?

Dope Tales    DopeTales clothes

I have to say these Disney Ducktales-based tee shirts and caps are very "class"! A shame they're expensive. Very good idea nonetheless. Is it me, or are we FINALLY seeing more and more things based on the Disney Afternoon shows?

Talking about it, Jymn Magon, the creator of such TV series as Gummi Bears, Tale Spin, Goof Troop, Duck Tales, ..., who also happen to contribute on Animation Source, will be doing webinars on "how to create hit shows" : creating appealing characters, developing scripts, targeting an audience...
If you want to go into the animation / TV business, or just want to ask him questions on these popular shows, you'll get more information here.

hmm many interestin points there (and predictions ;)) lookin forward to seein how this all plays out. Nice to see Disney arent monopolising the family entertainment industry like they used to. Now other companies have been goin strong with their 3-D films for a good while, which is always nice speakin in a creative sense :)

Whoa! Theres alot going with movies this year and the next. Im really getting muddled up and stuff with how many there actully is. But I really do hope Disney will make the 2D movie of whinnie the Phoo or there 2d aniamtion studio will be dead! And Disney is basicly my life! I grew up with it. Good on Pixar for making Toy story 3 good though, I saw that yesterday and it was excilent. They never seem to let me down with there movies. No real mention of Toy Story 3?

*EDIT: I now know why.

CGI films are not terrible things you make them out to be. For the younger generation who liked Cars, Planes will be a good film.

...ive still got my original winnie the pooh videos from when i was, like, two... i cant let this go by without seeing it in the cinemas.
as for dreamworks, i dont mind them making more cgi films so long as they are of a good standard, inlcuding plaot, characters, graphics, everything, which they tend to. but i gotta admit, i saw shrek 4 for the laughs rather than the storyline. it was alright.
disneys is unpredictable these days. i think its going slowly downhill, but tangled looks good. if they make films for all ages and not just for little kids then they will regain some of their former magic.

Urgh, I can't take this madness anymore! Planes with human faces, butchering Tinkerbell's character, and a SEQUEL to Cars? Jezzis, I gotta get in the movie business and save Disney before this get's out of hand! God, they already killed Cinderella, Mulan, and Bambi! I swear if they do ANYTHING Beauty and the Beast, I'll flip out!

I'm really looking forward to "Winnie the Pooh". That just shows Disney IS interested in keeping 2D alive. From what I've heard, "Winnie the Pooh" isn't a sequel so much as it's a spin-off; it features five new stories from A.A. Milne's book, while using the characters Walt Disney himself created back in the 1950s and 1960s.

And I agree with Steet: one of the biggest reasons "Despicable Me" is doing so well is because a trailer was attached to "Toy Story 3". That means other films, however, like "Tangled" (horrible name, but it looks like a terrific movie) and "The Chronicles of Narnia" will have a little more money in their pockets. I'm looking for the Academy Awards this coming year to have five Best Animated Feature films nominated, and I'm even hoping "Toy Story 3" gets a Best Picture nomination--and win!

Harry Potter FTW
I am loving all this 8D It's gonna be great, and I have the feeling. Though I still prefer 2D animation, CGI isn't so bad, either. I mean, look at all the good Pixar movies. Sure, it's no 2D, but it's entertaining nonetheless. I'm confused about why Disney would pick up a Pixar film, though.

You know what would make a better plane than clown makeup and clown pants?

A whole human face grafted on to the plane's nose!! http://pbskids.org/jayjay/

haha just kidding, that plane with its lipstick is terrifying enough.

Steet: "NO, reviews do not make people go see the films."

*sigh* Unfortunately, you're right about that with most people... but I was talking more about my own personal choice than my predictions for the masses.

IWolf => TP&TF was a very good film too, better according to RottenTomatoes. Yet it underperformed. Many CGI films made a lot at the box office, while they were terrible. The opposite also happens very frequently. NO, reviews do not make people go see the films.

It IS, when you don't like them...Or, better said : when you don't like how that technology is currently used. Tangled is a GOOD improvement.

I just saw Despicable Me, and the reason it's a huge success is because it's a really great movie. It has wonderful humor (those minions are so epicly awesome), quirky characters and a heartwarming ending. Hopefully the follow-ups will match it. (probably won't, but we should still hope).

Saw the trailer for Mega Mind, and it looks like it has a lot of good potential. I'm hoping that it turns out to be a great movie.

The only Disney thing that I'm really interested in is the Tron movie "Tron: Legacy". I've seen both trailers for it, and it looks really snappy. I'm still going to wait for the reviews, but it sounds like it will be a good one. For anyone who's curious, go onto Youtube and type in "Tron Legacy trailer" or something like that into the search and see for yourself.

I'm glad to hear that Pixar is doing sequels from their classic Pixar films, especially Monsters Inc. I just hope the sequels won't ruin the origionals..
It seems that CGI has really gone well, but I still hold on to 2D animation and hope that more films besides "Winnie the Pooh" will be in the making. It's just unreal that such a thing could die, and I don't like it.
Anyway, fantastic news steet, and I look forward to seeing these films. (Except I never saw Dispicable Me and I don't really plan to..)

I think there have never been so many animated films released. Whatever the kind. This year is a record. I didn't even talk about "Legend of the Gardians", "Alpha and Omega", "Rio", "The Smurfs", .... When will the trend begin to fade, I wonder...But it's bound to happen.
