"Behind the scenes" of Animation - Part 1

Written by steet :

Recently, I've read a lot of news on many sites (especially animators sites), in order to know "what's coming". And I have found many "behind the scenes" (mostly Disney related) , that I thought were enough important to share :

-Shutdown of the Universal Animation Studios Universal has closed down their "Universal Animation Studios" facility since mid-2009. I'm not sure how to understand this news, because it seems they're still making CGI films though not indoors ("Despicable Me" is coming soon), but we DO know that they stopped making anymore Land Before Time sequels and series. So yes, we can safely assume that the facility behind the Balto, An American Tail or Land Before Time Direct-To-Video sequels is no more...Their last film is Curious George 2, which is finished since ages but has yet to be released in most countries. (including USA)
http://animationguildblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/state-of-industry-and-tag.html

Layoffs in Animation
- The trend since the 2000's for big animation companies, is to hire animators for one project when they're needed, and get rid of them when it's finished. For example, most of the staff behind The Princess & The Frog has been dismissed since last summer. (a few months BEFORE its release) During the last century, the animators would stay at a company as long as there were projects. That doesn't sound very respectful to their employees...And you have to wonder what happens when they switch from one company to the other. (what's the point in teaching, giving out secrets of animation making, if that's to "give" the employees to other companies?)

Snow Queen cancelled

- Disney's Snow Queen, which was going to be the next "big" 2D project, has been shelved. Likewise, their other CGI project ("King of Elves") has also been cancelled. Which makes us wonder : what's going on? Not only this means there won't be any other hand-drawn film before ages ( Film ), but their mid-term future is a blur, something that rarely happened before. (Of course, I'm not counting the Pixar projects - they're a different entity. Not counting the "Pooh" feature film either, because...well...you see what I mean.)

- Currently, it seems that Disney is blaming the not-fantastic box office of The Princess & The Frog on its name - they now think that adding "Princess" in the title wasn't a good thing (so what are they waiting to change the DVD cover, then??) Personally, if I were them, I would rather blame their "Disney Princesses" brand for giving a very bad image of fairy tales stories to anyone who's not a little girl... As a result, Rapunzel (their current CGI project slated for release this year) is very likely to have a name change before it gets released this fall. Apparently, the chosen name is "Tangled" (strange name for a Rapunzel fairy tale...) As always, that's a very short-term vision : it may do some favors to the film on its release, but will someone want to watch a Disney film named "Tangled" in decades, which doesn't give any hint on what the subject of the film is? I seriously doubt it.

Yes, that's not very joyful news - sorry! Disney Stay tooned for more to come...

No weapon can sever the soul from me
But if they closed down, wouldn't Harry Potter World be in partnership with Disney instead of Universal??

I agree with Gray Husky because how will the next generation know what they're missing out on and not to mention there will have to be a lot done to get more movies out from the Animation Studio. I mean I have all three movies but I want more Balto movis made and I am sure everyone else on the source wants the samething.

I don't give a (censored) for movies that they show in 3D!! I like the computer animated 3D ones, (but I don't care about the kind that they give you glasses for)I go to the theater when I know a movie I see a commercial for is going to be good!! But shutting down 2D animation studios??!?!?!!? WTHECK!!!!
I think that's just ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!
Words cannot describe how dissappointing this is... UGH!!!
Movie like the Lion King, Spirit, Beauty and The Beast, Mulan and other 2D movies influenced me to actually continue drawing and believing the dream I had was REAL!!!
I don't know how I can even fix anything... because I'm just one person. And not many people might even read this... I don't care if people think this is some stupid fan wanting to be a nerd and keep 2D movies alive!!! It's what I believe in, and what I love people, you can't blame me for that!!!
But I really hope that they will continue to make amazing movies in 3D worlds, just make it good PLEASE!!!

And I will miss the 2D movies when they someday dissappear in my life.
I will be owning the Blu-Ray 20th and 60th anniversary Blu-Rays that came out when I was younger, and I will watch the REAL movies that have actually made a difference!!!

I'm making myself sad.... :( I am going to go now.

LET THE MAGIC LIVE!!!!!!!!!!

Jodudeit, Spirit wasn't ENTIRELY made CGI... it uses a mix of hand-drawn and CGI.

February 15, 2010
we get attached to 2D because it's what we've grown up with. and they are just modernizing cartoon styal movies because it makes more money now a days.

Okaaaaaaaay..., I'm getting some mixed messages here; I heard that "The Blind Side" outranked "Twilght: New Moon", & I heard that "Princess & the frog" outdid "The Blind Side" (according, 2 my mother, according 2 the Oregonian Newspaper, the opening weekend 4 "Princess & the frog); We all know that "Twilight" is pretty D@mn Popular, so wut the Hell should I B-leeve?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Maybe that "Avatar" (& no, not "The Last Airbender") film had something 2 do with it. :eyebrow:

February 14, 2010
I thought Spirit was CGI but was rendered to look all hand drawn. They could definitely apply that to all sorts straight to DVD stuff. And I don't see how The Princess and the Frog could not do well. It is certainly a lot better than the other kiddy stuff that came out with it like The Sqeaquel.

This is kinda funny, this is before DVD sales and all that. And we all know how much money Balto made on VHS compared to the movie release!

Well, maybe "Tangled" might not be such a bad film after all. I like Team Fortress 2, and Robin Walker wanted to convey a 2d-cartoon-like environment even when it's a computer generated game. Then there's Dragon Quest VIII that used a cell-shaded style to their characters, which is also used in Storm Hawks. Possibly, the show's we'll see in the future will try cell-shaded approaches to their characters if they actually adapt that to their sources...

BaltoSource.. DUHHH
I love movies when they have a nice interesting story, not some gay ass graphics "show-off".. i bet in about 5 years no one would even remember those stupid "graphic show-offs" but stories such as Balto, Lion King, Spirit, etc. would still be remembered and loved. It doesn't really surprise me that 2D studios are being shut down - it's like moving from black-and-white films to the coloured films :p You never know it might actually be a good thing

If they make another story of Balto in 3D, at first it might look kinda weird but if it has a nice story just as good as the first we wouldn't even notice that it's 3D! Well.. only if the animations are good also, not like the 2nd and 3rd ones...

As for shuting down Snow White and such... oh well their loss. There's not much we can do except encourage them anyways. I'm guessing people just get less and less interested in movies and more and more interested in games (ps3, wii, xboxlive, pc, etc.)

°x° Thank god they shut down, because I'm sick and tired of them just butchering Amblin Entertainment and Amblimation's masterpieces that they made back in the '80s and '90s with these direct-to-video ripoffs they made that they call "sequels". Now all we have to do is get DreamWorks into making traditionally-animated and theatrically-released sequels for Balto, and have Simon Wells directing them and making them what I call "Real" sequels. Come on Steet, back me up here, anybody, come on. Who's with me in bringing Balto back home to Amblimation? Not to mention, they are part of DreamWorks.

They're overreacting. Box office numbers shouldn't be at all how a studio decides to make movies. Case in point - The Black Cauldron. Biggest Disney flop ever. Had they followed their current route - there would have never been a "Golden Age" - The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin... And there is no doubt in my mind that they'll be kicking themselves when the DVD/BlueRay and rental sales of TPATG are through the roof. Most people don't go out to see movies in theaters any more - unless there's an additional carrot like 3D stuff.

While it may be unpopular for traditional animation (which I prefer) at the moment in the United States, the odds are fairly high that such films will make a comeback. People still watch the Simpsons, various other cartoons, anime, and so on. When Disney and other American studios sees that it's missing out - there's no doubt that they'll re-enter the proverbial traditional animation rat-race. They're businesses first, and entertainers - if it's good for business - second.

But there are still animation studios out there - and doing fairly well. Check out Studio Ghibli's releases, which are ironically released to North America via Disney (John Lasseter of Pixar is a huge fan). You will not be disappointed.

This happened last year, and we're just finding out about it NOW! What gives?! It seems Universal will stop at nothing to kill off the non-3-D series (or whatever that word's plural form is) that we enjoy.

Seeing this kinda news just comes as no susprise to me look at the year we live in now 2010, as we move foward into time the demand for future like movies that come in 3D such as Avatar give people a thought of "What if something like that truely exists" but in the real world it is what it is...a moive, its kinda sad seeing the shows we once grew up with slowly die but think about it, even IF they brought back Balto films ect. they wont be like what we saw back in 1995 it would be like taking Twister (1996) and making it a new moive more into the people around and in it and keeping the tornados just a side thing, i saw Avatar and i was blown away because at first i hated the moive then my mind was blown, but to me after watching Surogates on dvd i was disapointed because my summary of both was "Avatar meets Surogates" and as far as Balto, you cant even ask a kid thats 10 years old what the moive was about because they have never heard of it and thats to blame because they grow playing games such as Grand Theft Auto IV and all they see is blood gore and guns along with the pure violence thus making them want to see a moive thats just the same, and as far as NBC i was mad when they cancled SouthLand it ran for one season then they gave it the axe and now TNT takes over showing it how it should be giving the never shown season 2, the problem being is as we move ahead in time we start to forget what a REAL moive can be which gives you everything you want to see a prime example "The Dark Knight" it throws you into the plot and gives every detail down to the core, but sadly those kinda moives are just dying out and the new age turns to shows that are scary filled with violence and bad lead roles and short time lengths, Take Zombieland for example it starts out slow but before you know it your already at the end in less that a few hours. At least we got a good run out of some real moives at least like The Blindside which shows the charcters struggle and then seeing him overcome everything that was in his way, Correct me if im wrong but thats how i see future moives just plain terriable as long as theres no real moives that hit you in the heart when something epic happens perfect case in point..Anyone remember Lilo & Stitch?..

oh come on, you know that NBC or ABC will try to yank dreamworks hard enough that they will pump out another shitty sit-come rip-off series

i HATED father of the pride, NBC only did it as a last ditch effort to get their ratings back
IT ONLY HAD ONE SEASON!, THEY CANCELLED IT!

besides, i think NBC has enough on their plate right now with the whole Conan v. Leno thing

Technically, there is a shrek 5, but it's a spin-off with the Puss n' Boots character. Telling of the feline rouge's origins.

Personally, I'm looking more forward to Oobermind(even though some people speculate it to be the reverse of the Incredibles...)

*sigh* I enjoy the new looks of 3-D and I'll gladyl watch a movie tha has a good story... but I sure am gonna miss the joys of watching a 2-D hand drawn movie T-T I'm starting to miss the 90's and early 2000's at least there was 2-D back then. :( And I hope I don't have trouble finding a job when I get out of college (in about 8 years), I'm only good at hand drawn or digital pictures!! O-O

Glad to see there are so many reactions to this news, I didn't expect that :) I guess I'll continue to provide some news like this when I find them.

Minespatch => Yes there was a Balto 3 (direct-to-video sequel), and the reason why so many talk about that is because Balto Source is my first site : http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en/

There won't be a Shrek 5, they're stopping at 4th. Which is already way too many in a such short period of time, if you ask me.

Skulblak => Yes, Disney announced they intended to make a traditional animated film every 2 year - though that was BEFORE the release of P&TF. And they're including the next "Winnie the Pooh" movie in it, when it's more an attempt to revive that children property for merchandise reasons than anything else. (just like why Pixar is making a Cars 2) Seriously, do they expect the P&TF public to go see a "Winnie the Pooh" film? If they do, they're seriously mistaken...
So that will make a huge gap with the next 2D animated film, since they have to start from the beginning, which means not before at least 3-4 years.

*sighs* yes, it seems a dark period for animation as a whole... but don't despair! The magic of animation, of bringing something to life with pen and paper will always be there. It will surface again, just give it some time. ...also, long as everyone is talking about it Avatar is amazing... best movie ever made. I've seen it 5 times and I don't do that. I expected for the graphics to grab me, but the story really surprised me... strong stuff...

its just as ive suspected: disney has been flushed well and truely down the toilet. sorry, but ive given up on them. they have had very few decent cgis recently 9up was very emotional, and bolt was brilliant), but otherwise they might as well change their name to disappointment...
oh, btw, they are making a shrek forever after (it hink thatswhat its called) and later a shrek 5. they are seriously milking aperfectly good triology, they really dont need any more shrek films.

Oh... I guess I won't see Disney's version of a film that has already been done by Fliescher... What about Kingdom of the Sun? Is that what happened too? I mean, I know that they made Emperor's New Groove instead, but a film like the "King of Elves" is having the same treatment?

There was a Balto 4 in the making? What was the third film?

In my opinion, I find the film Avatar pretty "iffy". It's was too bad that Cameron focused more on a subject of anti-war when in fact the humans were mercenaries than soldiers. To me, Avatar was like "Atlantis the Lost Empire" except that I like Alantis more(I think I'm going to say that Mike Mignola is cooler than Cameron). If I did Avatar, I would have made it similar to "The gods must be Crazy", a tourism film combining with the Avatar/navi-humunculus project. If the main character was just a tourist just visiting Pandora as a vacation, and he learned about the culture of the Navi, then it would be also similar to the beginning of the first Godzilla(American version).

Isn't it true that Universal somewhat is working with Dreamworks? Doesn't the explain why they have a Shrek ride in their theme parks? Other than that, I'm actually looking forward to their next projects: Gardians of childhood and MegaMind. Can't wait to see those. Despicable Me is also giving me interest, except that I wish they would play the other trailer than the one I keep seeing with the Pyramids of Giza missing. It's quite tedious that I keep seeing that commercial than the one I saw with the Princess and the Frog trailer when I went to see Planet51.
