Ratchet & Clank - In Theatres, 2016!

Written by Karlamon :

Ratchet & Clank, the upcoming animated feature based on the hit PlayStation video game franchise, has been confirmed by the official PlayStation Blog that it will be releasing in US theatres on April 29, 2016. Universal Pictures subsidiary Focus Features (who are known for distributing Laika’s stop-motion films, and Shane Acker’s 9) have picked up the rights to distribute in the United States.

The

Along with a confirmed release date, a number of famous actors have been announced to provide voiceovers in the movie, including Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, and Sylvester Stallone. The main characters are to be voiced by the same voice-actors in the games, with James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank, and Jim Ward as Captain Qwark.

The movie adaption of the first Ratchet & Clank game has been animated by Rainmaker Entertainment (the makers of Escape from Planet Earth) under the direction of Kevin Munroe and Jerrica Cleland. Meanwhile, series developer Insommiac Games is currently working on a PlayStation 4 re-imagining of the first game which will tie in with the movie.

Karlamon’s comment:
Personally, I see this movie having a lot of potential as a video game adaptation, especially when it has the look of the games, the writer of the first game (TJ Fixman), and the original voice-actors of the games. As someone who didn’t get a chance to play any of the games in the past, I recently decided to buy the remastered trilogy on the PlayStation 3. Playing through the first game, I am totally amazed by how enjoyable, funny, and deep it is, and it seems like great material to adapt for the big screen. I plan to play though as many of the main games as possible before the movie’s release, so wish me luck! :3

There was going to be a Spyro movie (based on the Legend Of Spyro series) six years ago, but the project was canceled due to Activision wanting to take Spyro in a different direction (what became Skylanders, which isn't even Spyro anymore in my opinion) .

@Dragon Tamer: Rainmaker is also making an animated Sly Cooper movie after Ratchet & Clank.

Having never played Ratchet and Clank, all I can really think about this is how disappointed I am that Sly Cooper, Spyro, and Metroid are still no-shows on the silver screen.

I've been excited for this movie forever. Ever since the teaser trailer came out in 2013. Honestly I think it sucks it won't come out till 2016 because the movie was suppose to come out this year. But since I'm a big fan of the Ratchet and Clank games. I think this movie will be good.

I only know of the games, never played them. I was always more a Jak and Daxter fan haha. I'd love to see a movie with them, but oh well... I'll probably still check this out, out of curiosity.

I think there's more potential for this though, because it's closer to the original creation (modern CGI, with similar characters as feature animated films) unlike most game adaptations which were made of 2D games or early CGI games with realistic characters with very little background. (Silent Hill, Tomb Raider...)

That said, I've played only the first Ratchet & Clank and wasn't particularly fond of it. It's a bit repetitive, too action oriented with too little platforming. Games like Crash Bandicoot or Jak & Daxter were better IMO. I probably won't see this film, but it may work nevertheless.

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
I don't know...I really wonder, sometimes, what the animation and film industries are thinking when they attempt these things. I don't recall any attempt, either in live action or animation, of adapting video games (and their characters) to feature-length stories has ever produced any real success. I don't even remember animated television series based upon famous video games ever really having any lasting influence or staying power.

I think, after an initial rush by those who are either just curious, or (censored) gamers who will go just to see it at least once, this is going to be yet another bomb.

IMHO.
