The score for How To Train Your Dragon was created by John Powell. Powell had previously made several other scores for animated films, including Happy Feet, Ice Age (movies 2 through 4), both Kung Fu Panda films, Bolt, and Rio.
To help get a feel of the time period of the film, Powell utilized several Celtic-related instruments, such as bagpipes, pennywhistles and harpsicords. As this was the first time he had scored a DreamWorks film alone, he found it to be a challenge, albeit a welcome one.
The film score received universal acclaim, and was the best-selling film score of 2010. It received several award nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Score (losing to The Social Network) and the BAFTA (losing to The King's Speech). It won the Annie Award for Best Score, and the International Film Music Critics Association award for Best Film Score.
