Daisuke's family own's Fuji who gives birth two three puppies. He gets really attached to the silver brindle puppy which he names Gin. When Takeda Gohei has been trapped in a crevice in the ground for a week, Daisuke takes off to find him and brings Gin, hoping that Riki can meet his newborn son. Gohei drags Daisuke into safety in the crevice because Akakabuto is outside. He and Gohei see Akakabuto throw Riki off he cliff.

He gets angry with Takeda's Gohei's training methods after he takes in Gin for training to become his ne bear hunting dog. Daisuke somewhat learns his place but reassures Gin during the period of time that he can make it through to become stronger. Later on when on an investigation with Takeda Gohei, Hidetoshi and some men, he falls down a deep crevice in the ground and passes out. Gin goes down by himself and saves him. Gin was just a puppy and nearly killed himself while holding the weight of Daisuke on his neck and fangs. This made the bond between the boy and Gin really strong.

When Takeda Gohei has to take a break for months in order to heal, Daisuke starts training with Gin becasue they are determined to take down Akakabuto. He becomes strong enough to use Hidetoshi's bow. One day Daisuke steals the bow and heads off to the mountains with Gin where they kill a mother bear. When Daisuke froze with fear, Gin earned his three scars from the bear. Later on Daisuke composed himself to complete the kill. He tried to cover up he went to the mountains but Hidetoshi found out and banned him from touching the bow. The determined Daisuke didn't stop though, he got one from a store after proving he could handle the bow to the shopkeeper.

Daisuke gets upset that Gin leaves him to join the wild dog pack but never loses his connection or faith with his best friend, Gin. He knows in his heart Gin will face Akakabuto one day which did end up happening. After the final battle with the beast, Daisuke rushes to go see Gin, but he is protected by other dogs in the pack. Daisuke understands that Gin belongs to his pack so he leaves him be. He tells Gin that he will always care about him and be his best friend even if they are parted.
