beginning to run towards them. Chunk was fast on his heels, and they very quickly overtook the two limping animal thieves; the four puppies raced back through the bushes after the other animals and the men crashed through the undergrowth after them.

“Get back here, you little runts!” the bald man screamed.

“Keep going,” Axel panted. “We’re almost back at the henhouse!”

Sure enough, they tore through the line of bushes and came back upon the henhouse, where chaos was ensuing: the escaped animals had all made it here and were running around the chicken yard. Roger, Anita and Nanny were attempting to restore some sort of order by rounding up the animals separately, but Mrs Hen was screaming for her babies and everyone was still in a panic.

The two men in pursuit of the puppies arrived in the yard, sweating and breathing heavily. They stopped short at the sight of human company.

Roger caught sight of them. “Nanny- call the police!”

Nanny turned away to do so just as the two men made a run for it back the way they had come.

“We can’t let them get away!” Chunk said.

“Let’s get ‘em!” Hickory cried.

Axel, Berry, Hickory and Chunk tore after the men again, retracing their steps through the trees and bushes. They yapped as they caught up with them and started nipping at their ankles. Hickory snapped at the bottom of the bald mans trousers and managed to catch the fabric between his teeth. He pulled as hard as he could and caused the man to trip up and fall into the other man, and the two of them fell to the ground with a heavy thud. Both men fell unconscious.

“Nice job, Hick!” Berry complimented her brother. “They’re out cold!”

“Thanks,” Hickory giggled. “I suppose I should head back so that one of us can lead the police to them.”

The police arrived only a few minutes later and Hickory faithfully led them to the two men, where Berry, Chunk and Axel stood guard over them. The two men were abruptly arrested, taken away, and the four puppies made their way home again.

“Well, that was fun,” Berry said.

“Certainly an adventure,” Chunk agreed.

“Wait til we tell mum and dad!” Hickory said.

“We should probably go and help round up all the other animals first,” Axel suggested as he started to run. The others obediently followed.

However, the rest of the puppies had arrived on the scene to do just that whilst the other four were catching the thieves, and all of the animals had been safely rounded up. Roger was in the process of returning some of the stolen animals to their original farms whilst Anita settled the chicks back into the henhouse. Nanny was giving out treats to all of the puppies.

As soon as she saw the new arrivals, she called them over and Axel, Berry, Hickory and Chunk went bounding towards her.

“Some extra special treats for some extra special puppies,” Nanny chuckled.

The four heroic pups eagerly took their treats and munched on them right there and then, spending the rest of the afternoon basking in the warmth of the chicken yard and playing with the speckled chicks.

THE END.
