Okay, when you are done with your image
-Go to the File drop box
-Click Save As
-You can either go to Select File Type and pick PNG or JPG or you can simply name you image and erase .xcf and put .png/jpg behind it
-Now your picture should save as that file type.

I didn't get around to answering your Gimp questions, but was it that you needed help on? I remember you saying something about having saving issues...?
