Yes, Akitas do race, but maybe your dog just doesn't want to have a harness over her or whatever.

Well, they are not per se. However, they are one of the so-called "northern breeds" (one of the oldest lines of dog breeds), all of which stem from a Spitz-type ancestor. So they have it in their blood to do what all their relatives will (or can) do.
Really, ANY dog, given half a chance, will pull. And, with proper training, can be taught to pull a sled. Certain breeds are specifically bred for the purpose, sure. But even during Balto's time, history shows that all kinds of dogs were used to pull sleds...not just huskies and malamutes.
Here are some links that might help:

You can train just about any dog big enough to pull a sled. My dog pulled and she was a labxgolden. Just work at it and practice. And huskies start to pull at one year old. But, the start training, dragging light stuff tied to their collar, early nough. You might also want him to learn voice commands as well.

There are sleds which have wheels affixed to them. That is how they are raced in warm climates, or even when there is no available snow in more temperate or colder climates (even in Alaska you can find periods where there is no snow. It can get up to 60 degrees fahrenheit up there in the summer!).
Sledders would know more about this than I would. However, I have seen pictures of these. And read many descriptions.

They can. But mostly it's just the Husky and the Malamute that race.
