Not an easy question. If you want my personal opinion, this is unfortunately one of the most overlooked film, because of the reasons we all know. (failure in theaters because of a bad marketing, Toy story, Amblimation already moving to Dreamworks,...) It did sold very well on videos though, and that's why more and more people are getting to know it.
It's a shame that Universal has never and still don't consider the potential of this license...They still think it bombed in theaters because people didn't like it, whereas it was only because nobody got the chance to know it...

For the record, I only know Balto since one year. I loved animated films such as The lion king, and yet at the time it was released, I just never heard of this film...And I know it's the same for most people. :?
But, the good news is that more and more people in the world get to know it and love it, with time :)

Well, I said that Universal didn't consider the potential of this license, but it's not entirely true : if the original Balto didn't sell well, there would have never been a sequel. They did a sequel because they had the studios for and Balto was and still is a big seller in videos. And guess what, Balto 2 sold very well and broke all their (probably low) expectations.
So they made another sequel...At this time, I'm not sure how are the sells of Balto 3, but I think it will meet their expectations too.

Same in France...I think that the country where Balto is the most popular, even in proportion of the number of inhabitants, is the USA. (probably because when they released it elsewhere, they saw it bombed in the US so they did no efforts at all to promote it...)
It seems to be somewhat known in Finland or Germany, for example.
There are also countries where it seems there are very few fans, such as Spain.

About the "no marketing" problem that occured, it has an explanation at the basis, from what I heard. In fact, Spielberg decided in 1994 (so in the middle of the making of Balto) to create a new animation production team, which is Dreamworks, one of the reasons being that he wanted to distribute his own productions and not require the help of Universal every time...(it seems like they weren't in really good terms at the time)
Then, when Balto was finished, no one had really decided who should promote the film...So Universal did use a fairly low budget to promote it. An example would be the fact that they didn't release a video game with the film, whereas even the bad "We're Back : a dinosaur story" (the previous Amblimation animated film) got one...

Steet the econonically literate. -_-

Okay, this is the United Stater's point of view. Now, here, Balto isn't that famous as well. Not in the way that people talk about it. However, more than half the people I know will know what you're talking about if you mention balto to them. At least the first. Recognition drops dramatically after movie 1.

I never said that it is popular in the US, I said that it's probably where it is the most known.

I actually know alot of people who know about Balto, there not big fans, but the do know about it. So I think it has done okay in the states but it was still not well advertised. for an example take TLK 1 1/2 I saw commercials and cardboard standies, posters, and even a guy dressed up as Simba at one of my local stores haha (I payed my friend a dollar to go and give him a hug) well anyways, what did balto 3 get? like nothing all I ever saw was one commercial, too bad. I wish people would see how great Balto was.

If only we would know some people from Universal, maybe we could change their view on this license...Well, we'll see how the petition perform...I still thought there would be more signatures though :? How is it possible that there is "only" 550 signatures in three months, while most of the polls on my site get 300-400 votes in two weeks??

No, the petition is already a site itself, and it would not do any advantage because I think most real Balto fans who comes here see the petition link (but maybe I'm wrong there...)

Yes and no, this is related to how could we get Balto more famous...And I'm sure most people would say the same things as me, so the topic won't go much farther now.

it would be better in my opinion if when someone type "balto" in Google would find the petition in first page

It's not an easy task at all, even with all my efforts, Balto Source is far from being in first page, and worse than that : the main page of the site has even disappeared from Google :? The most important one and the only one missing :x And I haven't changed anything important on the site, yet...

In Latvia and Lithuania, it is getting more known with time... but im surprised that its such a good movie and so less people know it.

Very bad advertising, never heard of any advertising at all here

i remember reading on this time kids issue, that they were running the iditarod (Srry if i spelled it wrong) and it said that it was the same trail that Balto ran to save nome, and i told my teacher, and she asked "Who's balto?" shame shame shame. But you cant expect balto to be as famous as like, Bill Gates or anything.
