I just saw this on the National Geographic Channel... it's pretty sad.

The wolves that do run free in Yellowstone National Park are not native to the US. They are actually Canadian Grey Wolves. The wolves native to the US were, sadly, exterminated from the park by about 1926 due to human persecution. Dam superstitions... There was a sad picture they showed on the show that was of a bunch of dead wolves hanging by a back leg on the side of some cabin... There were at least 8 of them...

It is very sad. I saw part of that last night too. However, I believe all new world wolves, which descend actually from Asian stock (mixed with some other wild and possibly some pre-historic semi-domestic dogs, from what I have read), are from the same genetic stock. These are what we know, in the new world, as "timber wolves". I don't think they're that close, genetically, to the European gray wolf. That I have heard anyway.

My GOD, I am crying a little right now. Thats so sad...
