Knowing you, you'll love it, and its so worth seeing in person, I personaly think Nome is one of the best places to visit, same with the rest of Alaska, complete beauty, but a warning though, once you go there, you will not want to leave, its a place where apart of you will be left behind, and you will want to go back agian and agian, to feel what you felt behind and al of Alaskas beauty, plus all the vacction activitys there are just fantastic, like the cruise through the many bodys of water seeing all of the mountans, ocean life and the most beautful landscapes and water falls ever, and everytime you go, it never gets boring, you gain another sence of understand and beliving in things that are so beautful that you thought never could have existed, Alaska truely is the most beautful place on the planet^^ so if you ever get a chance to go take it, because its worth it^^
Shoot.. hmmmmm as soon as I find the pics I took in Nome and the other parts of Alaska i'll put them up, it's time like these I wish I wasn't a pack rat, because the pictures I took are burried away, but there are books after books full of beautful pictures I took everytime I went up there, because Alaska always changes, and the changes are never bad, they are always good and more beautful each time, so i'll try to hurry up in finding the pictures...... AHH!!!! HATE MY PACK RAT QUALITY!!^^ lol...
Ps Awesome pictures BS^^
Well now, there's two ways in which you and I are similar, Eclip...we both have an annoying pack rat problem, and we both are drawn to places we've been (or WANT to be)!
With Nome, while I've never yet been, I feel a draw...a STRONG one! The history calls to me...the echos of huskies barking, howling and yipping...the harsh calls of mushers...the wash and lap of the surf of Norton Sound on that peculiar beach...the scratch and tink of gold panners and prospectors...and just the general hustle-bustle noise of a prospecting town in the 1910s and 20s!
And I am SURE that, when I finally walk the streets, and the tundra, and the beach...some part of me will remain. And just as well, a part of Nome is going to come with me.
I may not be into the whole trendy scene like many people are with other aspects of life, but I do love history, and can FEEL it in the places I visit. And I hear it "speak" to me. It happens everytime I visit the American Civil War battlefields of Gettysburg (which I'm lucky enough to visit A LOT!), Spotsylvania, Cedar Creek, Bull Run, Chancellorsville/Wilderness, etc., or Revolutionary War battlefields like Yorktown, Monmouth or other historic places.
And, as with places like Gettysburg, I KNOW I'm going to hate leaving, when the time comes. It's so far from me, and so expensive a trip, I know I won't be able to do it very often, so I want to be able to soak up (and document) as much as I can, and make the most of it.
I want to FEEL the echos of the presence of Balto, Togo, Fritz and Fox...and Leonhard Seppala, Gunnar Kaasen, Curtis Welch, and others.
I want to stand atop Anvil Mountain, on Anvil Rock, and look down on the vistas around it. The way the cartoon version of Balto did at the beginning of
Wings of Change. I want to try and figure out where the cartoon Balto's boat would stand, in relation to Nome's 1925 borders, were it REAL. I want to grab handfuls of the sand of the beach at Norton Sound and feel it in my hands. I want to visit the location of Seppala's summer kennels in Cape Horn. I want to feel a cold sub-arctic breeze on my face. I want to pet a working sled dog. I want to even try my hand at amateur dog sledding...etc. etc. etc.
However, those pics aren't mine personally. Heh heh. They're just caps of the web cam in town.
