Okay I'm in need for some expert horse help. I've just came back from riding and I rode a different horse today. I usually ride a 15.2hh mare but Bailey is 16.1hh. But I think he might be lame. When he started to trot it was really stiff and uncomfortable and when he canters he goes practically at 100mph. I think it's because his muscles hurt when he does a slow canter so he tried to 'run' from the pain. Are they allowed to let people ride lame horses? It's not up to me who I ride, plus he's very old.

If he is at old age then no he should not be riden and yes its more likely i could be what you think its commen in old horses that their musclse become stiff and makes it hard for then to move and even harded with a rider on its back and they can suffer from joint locks and makes it very painfully for the horse.

Yeah but there's not much I can do. He's a lovely ride apart from being stiff.

Sounds like his muscles are hurting him, so he probably shouldn't be ridden anymore, but used just as a pasture horse.

Well I've just gotta hope that they don't use him very often. I think he's on painkillers.

Yeah but I'm used to riding fairly young ones. I think he might be even older.

He needs exersise, like being turned out in a round-pen, but he should not be ridden when lame, it could damage him more. But a healthy horse can be ridden as long as he is strong enough, up into their thirties even, if they're strong. He should be checked by a vet, to see if he is lame, or the stiff muscles could be contained energy and the running could be happiness. I don't know, that is just a guess. But still he should be checked by a vet, or a very skilled horseman.

I think he is. I only stay there for lessons and then go as soon as they're finished. I would of thought they'd get a vet on him already though.
