Many people are saying that we are so bad...so I decided it's time to talk about some of the positive things about humanity. For starters, we should be thankful to have an intelligent brain, and the right to choose.

Here is a quote from the 1984 John Carpenter movie "Starman" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088172), which starred Jeff Bridges (as the title character) and Karen Allen (best known for her portrayal as Marion Ravenwood in the 1981 Steven Spielberg/George Lucas hit "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082971).

In the movie, there is a scene in which the "Starman" character, an alien from an advanced race curious about Earth and humans, tells the main love interest lead (played by Karen Allen)...concerning the human race:

"Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst."

Why are there so many topics about humanity? This is just an add-on to the other topic about how doomed we are; why not just post it there?

LOL Kari. There seems to be some odd "thing" going on in the forums. Looks like it started when news spread about the vengeance exacted against sting rays in Australia by angry fans of Steve Irwin. Suddenly, we're talking about the human condition.

Finally. Something NOT dissing humanity. As much as it is true that we're stupid, we have good things going on too! Like ability to help animals when they need it and making fricken awesome food.

and the right to choose.

That's one of the biggest mistakes we always do: we think to be the only ones that can "choose" or "decide" something. However - my work with various different animals shows different. I try not to disturb their will and let them decide many things. Where rules aren't needed that I can have a peaceful life together with them, I offer them a lot of tolerance - what leads to interesting relationships between them and me. In fact it is what I call true friendships - as I'm not together with them because I feed them or force them to do things they don't like - we're together because of the interest in each other. The only reason why I got the job to care for Hairball (the tiger cub) is that Hairball himself decided to spend most of his time together with me. He simply liked me from the first day on. Or my brother has a budgie, which I rarely ever see, which I don't feed and who doesn't like any people but my brother and me... that budgie would follow me everywhere, through the entire appartment, she even welcomes me as soon as I get in. Such relationships don't exist because of instincts, they exist because of the animal's free will.

However - what's positive in homo sapiens? Evidently - there's something nature didn't know before our existence: morality. We are the only ones that can distinguish if something is fair or not. Nature itself, evolution and the entire circle of life is about the most cruel system imaginable. Life simply is not fair. Animals don't care wether another species dies out, or if a foreign young has to die due to some rivalry circumstances. They may care for a family and friends, but that's it. Ironically, exactly those who bring endangered animals into serious danger (or, even make them "endangered animals") are the only ones to figure out that it would be wrong to do it.

So - if mankind wouldn't exist - there'd still be species to die out. That's part of evolution. And nobody would care about the loss of these animals. Same as nobody would care about a hurt animal, or a young animal that lost its parents. Whats truely great in humans, that's that they can help other beings due tue exactly that feature: morality.
