Nava knows Aniu because he sees her in his dreams, telling him to follow the caribou and to be led by her granddaughter, Aleu.

If you mean before that, Niju knows Aniu too because he calls her 'the great Aniu' so she is a legend among the wolves.

Nava said "Aniu, the white wolf, has come to me in dream visions"

Nava says it when they are in doubt of what to do with the caribou problem and when he mistakes Balto for the one who should lead them, Niju laughs and says: 'See here? Our wise leader, who visits with the great Aniu only in his dreams, has brought a mutt to guide us!'

If you didn't hear him say that then you've really never seen the film, have you?

She came to him in his dreams. ^^ But maybe, they were in the same pack when Aniu was alive, too. We'll never know the whole story.

Tibby might be correct, maybe Aniu and Nava came from the same 'pack.

Dreams or they meet a long time ago..
