I rent sometimes if I don't want to buy. Or if I would like to see if a movie is worth buying or not. That way, if I end up disliking it, I've only spent a handful of dollars on a rental fee, rather than a lot on the retail price.

It depends. I usually ask people what they think about a movie before I buy it. Like, if my friends tell me that it's a really good movie, then I'm more likely to buy it.
But, if they haven't seen the movie yet, then I'll either see it in theaters or I'll just rent it to see if it's worth buying.

It depends to me too.I never rented a DVD or VHS myself...I just bought some DVDs(as e.g. Balto1 DVD and Balto 2 DVD),but I guess if someone would rent a DVD,would make a "copy" of it.
But I don't buy DVDs since my dad brings me some some not-original ones or DIVX formats since they were ripped.
