I've seen Mulan 2 (it came out in November in France), and remember that it will come out the same day as Balto 3 in the US.
I've written a quick review on Keyframe, I copy it here :

Mulan 2 was released in France (I'm wondering why nowadays, most DTV sequels are coming out everywhere in the world before the US...), and I've watched it. I must admit that this is one of the best DTV sequels from Disney. Maybe not at the level of TLK 1 1/2 (which had the best animation for a DTV sequel IMO), but the animation is still very good. However, I still didn't really like it. It is much different from the original : while the original was action-packed, this one is only based on love stories, and I found the story really boring and highly previsible. I didn't found Mushu particularly funny, and the songs weren't really good too, except from the main one ("I wanna be like other girls"). That's a shame that Disney can do rather well animated sequels like this (higher budget?), and can't give a solid content to it. IMO, Universal is doing exactly all the contrary...

Disney does have a bit of a problem with sequels these days now. Universal may be slacking a bit like them, I agree.

Animation wise, some movies cannot do the hi-digi-tech *hi digital technology* as the first movie got. It's hard to get that same technology into the sequels because today's today and Yesterday's Yesterday...

**I don't think I got the viewpoint**

I think they could do better, but since they put them on such a low budget they don't have the "manpower" so to speak and therefore they have to take shortcuts. As for the writers, I think they just find the ones that work for the lowest pay and they don't care if they can write a decent story or not. At least for most dtvs I think this is true.

Yeah, I agree with GK. I think the most important thing to consider in these DTV sequels is the budget. Remember, most DTV sequels (so probably the same for the Balto sequels) are made with a budget 10 times less big than the budget for the original... Hopefully they aren't 10 times worse (well, to think of it, there maybe some... - Jungle book 2 - )
I don't think that the sales are 10 times worse either, so you don't have to wonder anymore why they are doing so many DTV sequels these days...

I never said the contrary...Balto 3 is also a DTV sequel, as well as the Lion king sequels, and though I enjoyed them...

When I first heard that Disney was making a Mulan 2, I thought, "OMG!? Are they crazy?" Then I saw the trailer some time later. The trailer looked pretty good and almost as well animated as the original. At least they have some of the original cast in the sequel (like Mulan's mainly; the singing voices for Mulan and Shang are the same, I think), but Mushu just doesn't sound like Mushu anymore without Eddie Murphy . . . .

The story just sounds so not Mulan. Where's the drama and the butt-kicking action? Is there any action in it?

I might rent it for the heck of it, but I probably won't buy it (I rarely buy sequels anyway).

Yes, you're probably right : it was good, but it was too much different from the original IMO. You could compare that with Wolf Quest, for example...
There's only a little bit of action near the end, but that's all. From what I can remember, at least.
