Hey gang!
I was wondering whether or not any of you are aware of the old Wolfenstein 3D and it's sequel, The Spear of Destiny, which were released by ID Games back in the 80s. These were the first-generation of first-person shooter and three-dimensional (3D) video games, and were based on the earlier (and much more primitive) "Castle Wolfenstein".
I have not only played both, but have also seen that there is a substantial community of fans of this early-generation video game. And, since the source code was released for both games, countless people have designed their own versions of them (from the horrific, to the historical, to the silly, to the futuristic, etc.). Some of them are hybrids with the sister game of these two, the earliest Doom. In fact, there are now map editors and graphic design programs that support fan-based spin-offs of the two games.
Some of you may only have seen the recent release of the newer high-end, graphics-heavy Wolfenstein. But that's not what I'm talking about. I've heard that's a cool game, but I've never played it, and probably will not be in any rush to. There's something nostalgic and fun about playing "lower-res" games...even real low-res, 4-bit games like those on the old Atari 2600!
Anyway, check out this site. Mr. Lowe's Wolfenstein 3D Page is chock full of info about the games, as well as loads of free, downloadable fan-based spin-offs of the classic Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny. I have downloaded and played many of them, and they are GREAT!! (Although there are also some that suck, or are only fair). Here you go:
