Well, he has similar markings, yes. But that breed you speak of is just one of a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong line of "Spitz-type" dogs, which include (but are far from limited to):
Finnish Spitz
Siberian Husky
Alaskan Malamute
Samoyed
Alaskan Klee Klai
American Eskimo Dog
Chow Chow
Seppala Sled Dog
Greenland Dog
Akita
Norwegian Elk Hound
Canadian Eskimo Dog
Chinese Foo Dog
Pomeranian
Karelian Bear Dog
Keeshond
Norwegian Lundehund
Schipperke
Shiba Inu
Swedish Valhund
Japanese Spitz
German Spitz
Finnish Lapphund
Eurasier
(etc.)

Actually, a simple internet search with the parameters "Spitz type dogs" resulted in many lists. Heh heh. I actually have only seen pics and descriptions of many of those breeds in the new, big "Dog Bible" that's out on the shelves of your friendly neighborhood book seller.

I goofed on this earlier (the above comment)...I accidentally posted it inside of Black Shimmer's post (sorry, Black Shimmer!).
Highland, he probably doesn't have that breed's blood in him. But then, all the Spitz-type breeds are loosely interrelated...they all sprang, originally, from a Spitz foundation dog of some kind. Similarly, if you look at that photo, and then the photos of Balto, you'll see that Balto had a blockier head and chest, and wider stance.

Well, it is a known fact that Balto was a husky of the Siberian lines (from the Chukchi Inuit tribe's stock of dogs).

Finnish Spitzs, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Alaskan Klee Klais, American Eskimo Dogs, Chow Chows, Greenland Dogs, Akitas, Norwegian Elk Hounds, Chinese Foo Dogs, Pomeranians, Karelian Bear Dogs, Keeshonds, Norwegian Lundehunds, Schipperkes, Shiba Inus, Swedish Valhunds, Japanese Spitzs, German Spitzs, Finnish Lapphunds and Eurasiers are not very similar to Balto.
I think - Balto CAN be a Russo-European Laika!

Again, despite the fact that he has those markings, Balto was KNOWN to be a product of the Siberian Chukchi dog stock...a Siberian HUSKY. It is not out of reason to find dogs of similar breeds with similar markings.

Well, Balto is a perbreed huskie. But most Alaskan dogs look like another breed of huskie.

Well, he might be, he really looks like it but, I'm still clinging to my opinion that he is a Siberian Husky.
