It seems in Britain right now that Pit Bulls have got a pretty bad name. Almost every person that I know who has a dog that's been involved in a fight, the dog that attacked was a Pit Bull or Staffie. And the owner is never apologetic.

My mum's boss at work, her spaniel was brutally attacked by an uncontrolled Pit Bull. No muzzle or harness. No restraint at all. It got the spaniel round the neck and was.. apparently killing it. Of course, her boss instantly attempted to prize the dogs apart only to result in being bitten by the pitt herself. The spaniel is fine now but what came to the Pitt I've yet to hear of. I hate to say this but I think it should be put to sleep.

From what I know of this breed it should be socialized from a young age, being natural fighting dogs. Most of the people I see owning them obviously don't do this since they almost always aggresive. Fortunatly, most have the sense to muzzle them.

Another Pit in my area killed a cat. That too was unleashed. From what I read in the paper, it ripped the cat apart.. literally. The owner just left the cat and went on. But was caught by the police later on that day through witnesses. The dog was put to sleep.

I know that not all Pit Bulls are mean. They shouldn't be stereo-typed. But if only their owners could be bothered to train them..

What is your opinion?[/i]

well i dont think dogs should ever be put to sleep if people kill other people they get put in jail so i think it should go to the pound but for a dog thats nasty, but yeh, i think there owners just cant be arsed to get up and train them. lol i wanted a rottwieler but im kinda having second thoughts because my grannys one killed a cat, and got put down so im in a simerla postion :(

It's not JUST their owner. It's in their blood, or something what my brother said who had a friend who owned a pitbull, and my brother owns a rottweiler and had a pit mix I think.. He also owns a chow chow mix. He knows pretty much alot about dog breeds, So I would have to believe what he says.

Trouble is that particular pitbull could've been a dog used in illegal dog fights, it's awful really, the dogs fight almost to the death and people bet on which will win, unfortunately to hide what the dogs are used for people will take them out and let them off their lead to throw off anyone who may suspect them of using the dog in fights but when that dog sees another dog it's natural instinct is to attack as that is all it knows, police are trying to stop it but until then who knows, they are nice dogs really it is mostly down to the owners who buy them coz they look mean and have a mean rep therefore wanting them to be aggressive...and it works.

Pitbulls and any other dogs said to be vicious breeds, are not, by nature, mean at all. I know for a fact Pitbulls are actually a very sweet and gentle breed. It's us HUMANS that MAKE them mean, or whatever. But the sad, but true, fact is that once a dog is taught to be mean or used for fighting, no matter how hard anyone tries to revert it's temperment to a suitable dog for a family, it will never happen. The things it had been taught are wired into the dog's brain, and that will make them unpredictable. They could bite a child, or kill eve, because thats what it was taught all it's life.

Now don't get me wrong, I love animals, and seeing these situations on tv and reading about them gives me a wide range of emotions. But think about it...If an animal was forced all it's life to a life of fighting, cruelty and pain, it would be much more humane to end the poor thing's suffering, because no animal deserves to live through that. I really hate the human race, even though I, myself, am a human. We're selfish, greedy, and a ton more that I don't want to go into since it's off topic.

But my main point is that do NOT believe everything you hear about breeds like pitbulls or rotweillers (sp?), or doberman's or any other stereo-typed dogs, because they are used for those purposes. Not all of them are like that. Us owners can choose how they act, it is not the animal's fault, or choice to be that way. God put animals on earth to be our companions, not our enemies. If you want to hate something, hate the human race, because animals are pure and clean and all we did is 'dirty' the world.

Aheh, again, it's in their blood and what THEY were BRED to do. Yes, bred to do. They were bred to fight, not be those everyday loyal wonderful loving spoiled pets that you now see. It's in their blood, they are vicious, all dogs can snap at you any time they want, and such. What can we do?

99% of the time it is their owners. I've meet some pits that were trained in dogfighting and they were mean as all get out and did later get put to sleep. I also knew some who were very sweet and lived a long life and never so much as snapped at anyone. It's not that they were bred to fight at all. It's how they were raised.

Surely if it is in their blood to fight then their ancestors - owned by humans - used them for fighting originally.

Personally, I actually blame the owners. I know a few sweet and obediant Pit Bulls with strong and experienced handlers/owners. Though most that I see when walking Archie are owned by young boys who apparently keep them to look 'hard'.

I am not sure whether dog-fighting still goes on in the UK but I know it's illegal.

This is my Dog, he is full Pitbull, I got him from my dads friend when he was 13 months old he was lovely, sweet kind, even though he was locked up in a crate with hardly any food or water and no socialization at all for the first few months of his life, as he grew, he became a gental dog despite his apearance and then he was brutally murdered in my dads as some one broke in and slit his throat, now would you dare to tell me that this is a dangerous dog.......

This is a dog that has been brutalised into a killing machine, could you tell me this is a dangerous dog?

I'am not trying to start a fight I'am just trying to make a point that pitbulls dont need training to stop them from fighting its training that makes them in to fighters, by beating and tourtureing them that make them into killing machines just for a little bit of cash! yes they are born with the equipment to be a killer, but they have brains too and most of them are the lovliest pets in the world, I my self have been brought up with pitties since I was 3 months old, I am now 13, and I think I now quite a lot about the Pitbull terrier.

American Pitbull Terrier .. Aheh, My friend got one for free. He was a mean pitbull who snapped at most people, and then, my friend's landlord told em he can't keep a 'pitbull'. -_-; He asked if the rescue here takes in pitbulls, which they do, but the person told em no, and so.. the pitbull had to be put to sleep. =( Scarface wasn't really a bad dog, and my friend never trained him in fighting or anything. -Sigh- .. even if the pitbull was never trained in fighting, any pitbull, it could still snap at you anytime. Yes, anytime. A german shepherd dog tried attacking me at a young age for no reason, aswell as a chow chow that we once owned, and well ..

I no any dog can snap at you but that doesnt mean that pitbulls are out to bite people for no reason. Every dog has its reasons for biting, and that still doesn't mean that its in there blood to fight and so thats why they do it. how come if a pittie bites someone its all over the headlines but if another breed snaps you don't even hear of it, oh and just so you no in america most people are bitten by poodles not pitties, but cause there little and cause not that much damage they don't get put to sleep. and maybe the dog just didn't like kids or had had a bad time with young kids and thats whay it snapped at you.
Chickens pitfight how come they don't get banned or put to sleep, :( Cause they don't cause that much damage, but imagen they were twenty feet tall would they get put to sleep then? YES
And maybe the dog had been mistreated befor he/she got it, or that could just be an odd pittie, I have had thirty two pitties altogether in my life and not one has ever snapped at me american or otherwise
