Hmm...well, there are those which are strictly newspaper comics...and then there are those which also have been put into book (collection) form by their creators. As to a newspaper, I read the Philadelphia Inquirer* (Sunday edition only), and I always make time for the comics section! I'll list my favorites (and the ones I HATE) in each category (the first two categories are more or less in order of most to least):
NEWSPAPER COMICS I LIKE
1. Get Fuzzy (+)
2. Opus (and its predecessors, Outland and Bloom County) (+)
3. Non Sequitor (+)
4. Zits (+)
5. Piranha Club (+)
6. Foxtrot (+)
7. Heart of the City
8. Mutts
9. Jump Start
10. Baby Blues
11. Fred Basset
12. Baldo
13. The Lockhorns
(+ means I like these a LOT!)
NEWSPAPER COMICS I HATE
(Because the just SUCK. Or, well, just BECAUSE)
1. The Boondocks (+)
2. Doonesbury (+)
3. Dilbert
4. Overboard (strange...the first two comic collections are HILARIOUS...but this guy's daily and Sunday comics SUCK)
5. Bizarro
6. Rhymes With Orange
7. Pearls Before Swine
8. Cathy
9. Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet
10. For Better Or For Worse
11. Dennis The Menace
12. Sally Forth
(+ Means I REALLY HATE these idiotic, anger-inciting, liberal extremist comics)
*Some comic strips of note don't appear in the Philadelphia Inquirer, so I have no comment on those, as I hardly ever see them. That is pretty much the same for any daily & Sunday paper. And everyone has a different experience in this regard.
AWESOME COMIC COLLECTIONS I LOVE
(Not in order of my personal preference...)
1. Citizen Dog
2. Get Fuzzy
3. Overboard (the first two, which have TONS better humor, Get Fuzzy-style, than the daily & Sunday comic strip; and the artwork is better, I think...more frenetic)
4. Zits
5. Baby Blues
6. Sherman's Lagoon
7. Bloom County
8. Overboard
9. Foxtrot
10. Any Peanuts collection after 1955 and before 1985
11. The Far Side
12. Calvin & Hobbes
13. Mutts
14. Broom Hilda
