This is the introduction/teaser/prologue for a fanfic called Red Blade. I haven't decided whether or not to tie it in with Balto, but I'm setting most of the story in Nome, just in case. Rated PG-13/R for violence, character death, and cursing. Don't say I didn't warn you. I put this in bold print, after all. If you strongly disapprove of content like this, you'd better have a really good reason other than curiosity for reading it and then flaming me about it. The sickening scent of blood wafted through the icy night air, followed by a bloodcurdling howl that spoke of grief and fury.
In a small cavern, a powerful male wolf with thick fur of red and gray trembled uneasily, standing over the bloodied body of a white husky. He raised his head and cried out,
"***** you humans! May Aniu and the powers of the wolf show no mercy!" He looked into the frozen eyes of his once radiant mate, and continued screaming, "Taika, revenge will be sworn, but not until I join you and leave this hell of a world!"
He panted heavily, and an insanity glinted through his yellow-green eyes. He glared at his white furred son, who was backed into a corner. He scoffed, and hissed cruelly,
"Coward. Toka, show some courage for once! Get over here, now!" Toka, barely more than a year old, gulped and trembled in fear. He asked weakly,
"Why? What do you want?" His father grabbed him by the neck and flung him against another wall.
"Now, boy, kill me now, or I'll kill you! Serve some purpose for once, and make up for the cowardly existence that you've lived since you were born along with seven Dead Ones! Do it, now!"
Fearing for his life, Toka bit into the wolf's leg. His father screamed in frustration,
"You moronic weakling! That is not how you kill! Look long and hard at your mother! The places where she was shot by humans and torn by their dogs! The chest! The throat! Do it right, and do it soon! Taika is growing impatient!"
"You're wrong Father. Mother's not the type who would impatiently await your death and let you use your own son. I refuse to kill you." The wolf snarled, and bit into Toka's neck, holding him above the ground. He said with ice in his voice,
"I already warned you! If I'm not dead before sunrise, I'll make sure that you live in hell as long as I live!" He dropped Toka, who breathed heavily and coughed out some blood. His icy blue eyes burned, and he finally understood. This wasn't an ordinary suicide. His father and mother really did love each other this much. Toka lowered his head.
"I'll do as you say." Taking a deep breath, the young wolfdog slowly closed his jaws around his father's neck. He smiled, and whispered weakly,
"Good boy. Go on. Don't be afraid. I wanted this ever since your mother died." Toka ignored him, but silently surprised by his calm voice, tightened his jaws and gritted his teeth, refusing to let his father's blood go between them.
Toka's father coughed, and went on in his calm voice,
"Good work. Let go now." Toka released him, and the wolf shouted loudly but weakly, keeping his head above the floor of the cave,
"The time has come, Taika! I can join you once more! I'm coming! I'm coming! I'm...." Toka's father let out a final gasp, and his head fell to the ground. His son choked back sobs, and felt his timid tone become cruel, cold, and harsh. His voice shook as he furiously snarled,
"I swear, once and for all, that I refuse to leave this world until whoever murdered my mother and drove Father to suicidal insanity dies a bloody, painful death at my fangs!" He stopped, and smirked as he continued, "And from now on, my name is Red Blade!"
Transformed for the worse, Toka, now Red Blade, crept out of the cave, and into the light of the rising sun.
"Just in time," he said to himself, as his walk became a run. He looked at the town lights a few miles ahead, and narrowed his eyes, growling, "I will find out who killed Mother, and I know just where to start my investigation. Next stop, Nome!"
