For me the difference is that japanese animation is very funny in the sense of the way they draw the characters' emotions! English animation story is more real then the japanese animation story! Japanese animation is more for the fun while English animation is more to touch you deep down inside!
Speaking of the animation, English animation on the items the character about to touch are very obvious that the character is going to touch that! I agree also that Japanese animation have some serious moments while English have some funny ones but still there is lack of serious feelings in Japanese animation while English animation humor are mostly in the words but Japanese are usually not humor in their speech...

Japanese anime is actually based off of manga comic strips you can find here in the U.S. but mainly in Japan but if you didnt know old Japanimation wasnt always like that, it was sort of different back in the 19th and 18th centuries. English animation is just English animation but is varied by different influences and cultures or time eras ex. if you've ever seen 101 Dalmatians you'd notice the background's outlines are a bit odd in a certain way how they look so ugly but its actually depicting how 60's English animation was almost like. So theres a big difference.

It seems highly stereotypical to me...There are many, many japanese animes that are very serious in every point, and there are many american or english animations that are only made to be funny...

Well, the style is about the same, that's true. However, each artist differs quite a bit.

If you've ever seen the Animatrix which is composed of 9 animated shorts those are different styles of Japanimation drawn by some of the most talented artists in the world.

Can't stand anime looks cool but not my style. American style is too sketchy gorey and well gruesome most of the American comics i read so far are. My drawing styles kinda in the middle.
I think one key difference between anime/manga stule and american style is that American style characters have this hardened look to them while anime/Manga is more rounded. Not in every case though... Sorry if im doing anything wrong but i always refer to it as "american" style just some habit i formed.

A lot of people here don't seem to understand much about anime. Steetboris has it exactly right: There are many kinds of anime and one should not try to stereotype all of it. It's true that Japanese anime can have some wacky, playful humor, but even so, anime is usually more serious than English animation and it often deals with subjects that some societies refuse to accept. The really good animes are very philosophical and deep and focus a lot on character development. I do not love all animes, nor do I hate all English cartoons, but in general, I find that anime does more for me than any English cartoon.

Surely have something different.Sometimes they can be more serious than western animations and can be very sad.Natrue protection, war and damily is the subject they like to use.
