Post subject: Testing your knowledge of images seen in the cartoons!
PostPosted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 7:20 am

Hey gang! It's time for a little test. I don't know how many of these I'll be able to generate, but I do have a few so far, and I will post the first one here and now (and subsequent ones in this same thread).

This will test your knowledge of images seen in the Balto cartoons against real history. I encourage you to try, and view this as a sort of "open book" test...meaning that you can do whatever research you want on the internet to get the answers you need! Hey - it has the added goal of encouraging research and learning! LOL!

I have no awards to give. The person who succeeds has nothing more than the pride in knowing that they answered a question that might have been a real stumper to the majority. And he or she should be VERY proud of that!

That all being said, here's the first question:

This large structure (pictured below) appeared prominently, on the edge of town, in each of the Balto cartoons. Know what it is? (Good luck!)

oh, oh! I think i know this one! i'm afraid i don't have a very technical (sorry about my awful spelling) answer, but i will try!

In the movie, that is the 'old mill' right? Well actully, i believe that isn't a mill. But it is a mining building from when Nome had the great Gold Rush. Now, i know quite a bit about Klondike, but i'm afraid, not very much about the Nome Gold Rush, so i really should learn more. I think that its called a Gold Dredge or something, and they were used all over Alaska. They helped minors get gold from the ground in a short period of time. I did some research on it! And i already knew a bit about Klondike and mining (thank Jack London for that) and i have found out some info. This is what i found out (written in my own words!) :

Sluice boxes and gold pans were yes, used for mining gold, but only for testing if the gold was actully there. Little was found that way, so they indroduced Gold Dredges. After this, more and more gold was found in the North. The Gold Dredge, would use buckets to scoop up gravel which would be tested for gold (at least thats what i think, i could be wrong about this) There was a gold dredge not far out of Nome. I believe this is what the picture is! It's an abandoned Gold Dredge used by the minors in the great gold rush of the 1890's!

here is the link to a good site about Gold Dredges. There is little info on Nome though, but a lot on the history on gold dredges!

Well DONE, Highland Wolf! I'm impressed! Heh heh. Yes, that is indeed a gold dredge. There are actually a FEW seen in the Balto cartoons, though the one pictured is seen most often. They were quite large in those days (as your website link points out), and were often standing structures...unlike most modern dredges, which float. Here is a picture I had pulled, earlier, of a floating dredge, which is not as old as some of the ones which dotted the Seward Peninsula during the gold rush (note how little they've changed over time):

Ah, Highland...you continue to impress me! :D

Thank you! Yay, i won! Yea, i saw some modern dredges while i was researching, they are a lot smaller! On the DVD for Balto, they show some pics of Nome and Nome today ect. and i remember seeing, yes, more than one Gold dredge. There seems to be a few. I forgot about that! I have seen pics of Nome with about 3 i think, but i think i have only seen one in Balto, but i guess i will have to look harder!

Here's a screen shot from this website (from the multimedia section of the Balto 1 page) showing what I mean...although this picture (part of the scene when Balto's team arrives back in Nome) is the only one I am aware of which shows more than one dredge (and I don't think any other scene in any of the cartoons shows more than just the one dredge):

And no, not a second dredge, but look at the inside of the dredge in these pics, take a good look all around it! It looks really good and realistic. Now look at the real insides of a gold dredge...
