OK; sure the animation is very poor but the animation in the first isn't perfect either. YES Jenna had to be in it more. YES the songs were pretty bad. but everyone keeps on saying how they hate WQ so much!!! I saw it accidentally on Cartoon Network before I had even HEARD of the first and it was one of the best animated film I'd seen for ages!!!

Your comments please^^

I don't HATE it. It just could have been better.
1) The animation was poor.
2) Some of the character's personalities were flat.
3) All the spiritual stuff got kind of weird.
4) Balto and Jenna's personalities had changed, especially Jenna's.
5) The plot was not original.

It just wasn't as good as 'Balto'. Yes, sequels tend to not be as good as their predeccesors, but it was disappointing because it could have been better.
Plus, there were funny parts in Balto. In Wolf Quest, I don't remember any parts being funny. I like a little humor.

I don't hate it. I really liked it very much. I thought Aleu was really cool. And the spiritual stuff was pretty nifty. lol. They should have at least given the other pups a name, though. Not just Kodi and Saba.

i don't hate it.
in fact wq has a very interesting story line
but some things ruin the movie:
1. Bad animation
2. a lot of spiritism that causes headache
3. The main character(Aleu)
4. Expected ending with no end
5. WQ is first of all Balto2. Well Balto wasn't the main character and neither was his mate Jenna
6. Bad animation

I don't HATE WQ, I just don't like it as much as B1...

1: The animation got on my nerves after a while.

2: The seemingly endless amount of bloopers it had.

3: The story line and the characters were'nt as well developed as they could have been.

4: The ending was terrible.

5: There were so many annoying chars in it, the scotty dog, Muru the mouse, Niju really ticked me off and they made Boris a complete plank.

6: Aleu's character design was seriously flawed in all aspects.

I saw WQ first when I happened to notice it on VHS in the supermarket and it was called Wolf Quest, nuff said, I bought it, liked it and went mad with excitement when I saw WoC on the shelf at another store a year later, it took me a while to find out that WQ was the second film so I went straight to HMV and ordered B1 which is my absolute fav out if all three, then it's WQ and WoC comes last, but no I don't hate WQ.

This is the review I posted on my site, Rotten Tomatoes, and Keyframe Online:

I was really disappointed in this movie, but I wasn't expecting much from it to begin with.

My first gripe is that none of the original cast is back and some of the replacement voices just sound awful. Boris, for one, doesn't sound Russian in the least bit, and the two polar bears sound like they are from Australia.

The movie focused mainly on Aleu, Balto's daughter, and Balto was really the only character from the original that made it into the movie for any length of time. Jenna was dumbed down and left out of the movie except for the begining when she had the pups. Boris and the polar bears were just plain annoying in this one, whereas in the first movie they actually provided a little comic relief. I really couldn't like Alue either. To me she was like a bad clone of Kiara, and her voice and actions were really childish. Even if she was only a year old in this, that would make her an adult in dog years. Muru, the mouse spirit guide, was really just a stupid idea. I think he was mainly in there as a time filler. Niju, the bad guy, was the weakest villian I think I've ever seen in a movie. Instead of standing up for what he wants, as he did when he first met Balto and Aleu, he turns chickens near the end.

I really didn't like the "mystical" spirit stuff they threw in. It was really bizarre at times. They could have kept, somewhat, to a theme that followed the original movie, and still kept the main theme of the WQ.

The songs aren't so great either. The only one I really enjoyed was in the begining when the puppies are being adopted out. That song was nicely done and fit well with the movie. The others, however, seemed to be time fillers and just out of place. The score is just about as good as the songs were too. Many of the lines in the movie were very cheesy too.

The animation in this movie was awful. The CG water and backgrounds clashed with the 2D animation badly in most places. The coloring on Balto was off a lot and at times the design of the characters would change. Everything had a very boxy feel to it, but with the original things ran more smoothly. Many of the shortcuts in the animation were visible to where they reused frames instead of making new ones. A lot coloring bloopers were visible for more than a few seconds. i.e. whole parts of the dog/wolf would turn a different color, like an eye, ear, or foot. Although it is just a tad better than a few of the other dtvs I've seen put out by MGM.

This movie could have worked, but it just didn't. The writers could have done a better job on both the story and the script. If they had stuck to a less bizarre theme and made it more like the original I think it would have gone over better. Overall it may be good for one rent, but not a good one to buy.

Ok, why do I hate Balto 2?

1) The most top reason why: it had NOTHING to do with the first movie. (The only things that were the same were the reappearance of the characters and even THEY weren't the same.) The movie was PURE fiction, whereas the first movie was based on a true story.

They broke one of the rules to sequel-making: NEVER mess up the TRUE story. And they did. Balto was a real being and they ruined him putting him in a sequel, which not only shouldnt have existed in the first place, but had no trace of the first movie. Nothing was true about it.

2) The characters were VERY different than they were in the first movie, if they were the same at ALL. Every character had a bland, one-dimensional personality. "Filled with...unforgetable characters," The only reason these characters were "unforgetable" was because of how they acted in the first movie: They were different and original and unique.

But in BOTH sequels, they were very typical and predictable AND out of character. Not only were the characters colored different and voiced different, but if I didn't know any better, I'd say that they were totally different character altogether. Nothing was unique about them in WQ, especially since they focused on Aleu, who was a Kiara knock-off (minus the love-interest) They made Balto a devoted OVERPROTECTIVE father. Typical. Nothing special about that. Nothing about THIS Balto is as special (if at all special) as the Balto we grew to know and love in Balto 1.

But I especially want to pick on Niju. He was by FAR the weakest antagonist on the face of the earth. He didn't kill anyone, he didn't even INJURE anyone. And he ended up running away at the end. Not something a true antagonist would do. And yes they did try making him "evil" You can tell just by watching his actions next to Nava's. Niju was the "all-out bad guy with bad intentions" whereas Nava was the "all-out good guy with good intentions."

3) The spiritual crap HAD to go. The only thing in the first movie that was SOMEWHAT spiritual was the white wolf. But no, they went all out for spirituality in the second movie, which was not only WEIRD for this particular sequel, but also pointless. There was no point in the spirit guide, Muru. The only thing he did was tell Aleu about the journey she was on (probably because I personally think she was too stupid to realize it herself) But they could have avoided her lack of knowledge.

The animal spirits that led Balto to Aleu had no use. If they were not placed in the movie, he would have found her anyway. And as for the "becoming one with the tree" thing. I don't even know what that was about. There was NO use for it. They treated the wolves' beliefs like the Inuit, but the problem with that is wolves do NOT have the same beliefs as humans. So that did NOT work well at all.

4) The plotline was very boring. Balto's daughter has to find out her own destiny. Big whoop. Because of Aleu, Balto was practically ignored. The plotline had nothing special about it. That pretty much covers it and really needs no other explanation. But basically everything in this movie has been done before and didn't/doesn't need to be seen ever again:

Aleu was upset about being different; done before. Balto feels the need to protect his daughter; done before. Aleu runs way; done before. Aleu becomes a potential leader; done before. Everything in the movie was already done in some way, shape or form. Which in turn leads to number five.

5) There was no "on-the-edge-of-my-seat" action. Of course it's a kids movie and by the time this movie came out, more parents were protective about what movies their children were seeing. But that was no excuse for this movie.

CARE BEARS had more action than this movie. Every kind of situation any of these characters were in was potentially dangerous, but they treated it like nothing. Fighting that bear was just a big ol' joke. A dog fighting a bear is a big deal and the dog can even die, but nobody even put up much of a fight with this bear. And wolverines can be very vicious animals, but all they did was corner Balto and he growled.

And also, the fighting amongst the wolves. All they basically did was tackle and growl at each other. No biting or snarling or anything. Wolves are viscious when they mean business, especially with each other. They made the wolves seem 100% cuddly, just in that lack of action. I mean, seriously, would you want to even MESS with Steele after seeing him rip Balto around? I think not.

6) The animation was just TERRIBLE. On the back cover of the DVD it says "This...sequel...is a brilliently-animated adventure your whole family will want to share again and again!" That is a bald-faced lie. The animation was bad and they knew it. (and I sure as hell didn't want to watch it more than half-way through)

There was not a single frame in that entire movie that was in proportion. Every character was shaped weird. Every character was built weak. No proprtions were physically possible for any wolf/dog and I will not let it slide because of it being a cartoon. The proprtions of Aleu, for example, are out of whack, like her abnormally long, curved neck. If that were a real proportion for her, she would fall over.

And even the overall focus on the characters' design was elsewhere. The colors of the characters NEVER stayed the same and neither did their markings OR their proprtions for that matter. One minute Aleu was an auburn with a light auburn face, then next she's grey-brown with a darker-colored bridge on her muzzle. Did her tail curve or flow? Nobody knows, it changed throughout the whole movie. And so did her number of toes. Sometimes she had four. Sometimes she had three, and the position of her feet didn't matter either.

The animation in the first Balto was AMAZING to say the least. And with the technology we had at the time, it still should have lived up to the OLD stuff. Not only were the proprtions off, but so was the all-out movement of any character. They were stiff and didn't move naturally. Basically, if they weren't STANDING, they looked even worse than they already did. Any kind of run, walk or jump looked unnatural and uncomfortable for the animal.

7) The songs were VERY annoying. I mean, I like musicals as much as the next person, but there's a reason why certain movies are musical: they're GOOD at it. These songs were not enjoyable, or even catchy for that matter.

The writers of the lyrics must have just started writing lyrics at the time, because the words meant nothing. It was nothing the characters couldn't SPEAK for themselves.

Instead they had a tone-deaf chorus of people sing their already mediocre lyrics. I often wonder if they just randomly went up to people and asked them if they wanted to sing in this movie.

And not only was the singing terrible, but the music itself wasn't all that great either. From what I can remember, it's quality resembles that of an 8-bit audio file that was in a videogame from the 1980's.

Ok, fine, I will admit "Taking You Home" or whatever that song is called, you know what I'm talking about. That song was ok. It was sweet, and the lady singing it wasn't too bad either.

8) The movie lacked any emotion (except for extreme boredom and that occasional vexation) Anything the characters said or did really meant nothing to me. I tried showing compassion, but the movie really made it impossible, even for me.

But honestly, if any of those characters were to die in that movie, I would not have cared. The characters didn't show any emotion towards each other (well, they did, but they may as well not have, because they didn't make it that important to them)

Any kind of emotion in this movie, like any movie, had to do with how the character speaks. If they show emotion, it triggers emotion in others. If a character is angry at another, the viewer is supposed to feel that way too.

For example, when Balto and Aleu were fighting the bear, and Aleu almost fell off the cliff, they didn't show Balto being very concerned about it, they just showed him helping her up. No "Oh no! Aleu's falling!" thing or anything. And when Aleu said "to" the bear "I hope you're right" about the ledge being at the bottom of the cliff, she said that AFTER she pushed her father off the cliff.

So if the bear wasn't right, she would have just killed her father right there. She didn't seem concerned for her father's safety that much.

And Jenna didn't seem that worried about Aleu after she ran away either. It sounded like she was TRYING to sound worried. And also Boris didn't too confident in Balto as well. He didn't sound like he DIDN'T have confidence in him, but his voice was just flat and unemotional, like all of the other voices.

That's basically it as to why I hate the movie. But I will lighten up on it, some just for the sake of reason:

The backgrounds were lovely. I thought they were very beautifully done (minus the one scene in Nome where all of the buildings look like they're about to fall over) The backgrounds were full of color. They'll never match up to the real beatuty of the hand-painted backgrounds, but they were pleasant to view nonetheless. It's a real shame that the animation didn't match the backgrounds.

And also, it was nice to see what became of our hero to see that he was doing well. (But they still could have gone at it a different [and more realistic] way)

So overall, I thought it was a horrible movie. Not the worst movie, but still horrible. I give it 2 quests out of 10.
