Let's face it. The Balto sequels aren't perfect, because certain characters, events, and elements of the stories don't match the original or are just plain unlikeable. I have noticed more than one means of dealing with this.

Some authors deal with it personally. I call it the "revenge" method, and this is especially evident with characters. The character may be portrayed in an exaggerated negative role in a fanfiction, and/or killed mercilessly, usually by the author's character. I'm not listing names here, nor am I saying that this way of doing things is wrong, as every author is fully entitled to their own way of writing fanfictions.

The other way of dealing with it is by doing rewrites of the particular sequel, like I'm currently doing. By doing so, the author can change anything in the story to their personal liking. Any unlikeable character can either be removed, or their personality can be changed, plots can be revised, favored pairings included, etc.

Now that I've given my opinion, what are some other opinions to the two methods? From what I've gone over, I personally prefer "rewrite" over "revenge" but that's just me. What to you think?

I think that's a marvelous way of thinking! I have personally used the "revenge" method, but I never really thought about categorizing it. The "revenge" methoc used by me was to get rid of Aleu because frankly, I don't like her at ALL. So I changed her character to make her less likeable (which I personally think WQ tried not to do, but failed) and I gave very good reason for my character Kiona to kill her. Naturally there's more to the story, but I don't want to spoil anything for later fanfics Im going to write.

And as for the "rewrite" method. I have thought about re-making (well...re-writing) Balto 2, because it was a terrible sequel, I thought (and no amount of flaming will change that) And the same thing for Balto 3. If I were to re-write Balto's sequel, it would lean more towards what happened to the real Balto after he delivered the medicine. Naturally, I would have to change a few things in order for it to be mroe interesting to read, but hey. Ntohing wrong with stretching the truth (which was most likely one of the methods the creators of B2 lived by...)

Every fanfic author has a right to speak their mind, and it angers me when people read their fics (knowing they won't like it based on the idea) and then flame them for it. Those people deserve worse flaming than that. No one has the right to tell someone that they shouldn't think something, or not like a character or whatever .

But yes, I like these methods, and Im glad you gave them names and pointed them out Haha.

You know why I think that the revenge method hasn't been used on Stella? Because she's so much worse than Aleu, that when you compare the two, Stella isn't even worth the trouble. :D

You're probably right. She's such a feeble, pointless character

Slyver, you've made two excellent points, and I agree on both. That was a great way of looking at written reactions to the sequels.
And cat, I thought your way of dealing with the sequels with It Ends Tonight and Buried Secrets was very reasonable. They were both good fics, and I enjoyed them.
Personally, even though I had my opinions about the sequels, I didn't care enough about them to rewrite them in any way, so I just worked around them. In doing so, I made very few references to them, and when I did, they were small, and mostly insignificant, facts. One thing I did do was never even mention Stella. She is, to quote you, cat, 'a feeble, pointless character.'
Yet, other characters did appeal to my interest, like Kaltag. (Although not all of said 'other characters' were protagonists. )

Write on, everybody!
