At least I think it's a reasonable solution. Since it's true that they stuffed Balto's actual body in Cleveland's natural history museum, wouldn't it be easy to take, like a fur sample from it, and run a DNA test on it to find similarities in the DNA of wolves and breeds of dogs at the time?

This is still just a thought that came to my head.

That would work although with all the stuff they use to make the taxidermy model of the animal I doubt any workable DNA will be left.

You're right but it's worth trying anyway....

Wait, hold up, Togo. Even Steet said that nobody really knows what Balto was, as they probably didn't have DNA testing back in the 1920's. Still, it would be cool to just at least try that...

LOL Its a dog. Balto was a pure breed, he would not have been allowed to race if he was not a dog. He's either a husky or a malamute and I'm sure its listed on the information in the museum he is at.

Common people, he was a Siberian husky (although before the breed was recognised). If you read any respectful book it states that, not something on the internet that a 4 year old thought of.

Anyway back to the original topic a DNA sample that is as old as any possible one from Balto would be so degenerated it probably would have no value to the test

It would have worked years ago but not now. Over the years and with the lighting, his fur has faded from black to a dark brown. :?

There are no bones of his left now, they were removed when he was stuffed, it may be worth a try if you were really desperate to find out but as others have said he is just a dog and it says what his true breed is in the books.

Remember they stuffed and mounted him. There are no bones left of Balto. But Togo's body is in Anchorage and his bones are at Yale but that's beside the topic...

What would Yale University have to do with Togo's bones? Ah, that's off-topic.

But still, if they somehow for some reason didn't discard Balto's bones when they stuffed his body, then his bone marrow would have workable DNA inside it. The only problem with that would be finding them...

OK, now this idea sounds pretty, you know, stupid now that it's been confirmed by many who know what they're talking about, that Balto was an Alaskan Malamute. Case closed.

BTW: Ac, I may have misinterpreted your post here, but, dude, I'm 15, not 4! Come on, do you think a 4 year old could spell this well?

I wasn't calling you a 4 year old.. I was saying don't believe unofficial rubbish on the internet saying he was some other breed.
