Has anybody read or is working on reading Big Red? It is amazing. It start off so sudden, with what you would think is action, but nothing happens. But in the second page, the boy, Danny finds a Red Setter. The first four chapters, which is all I have read, are mainly about Danny and "Red".

I've read it (but don't have it anymore) and I saw the movie, too. (It came in a set along with Old Yeller and Greyfriar's Bobby--classic dog stories!) I don't really remember if I read the other two Red books; I feel like maybe I did, because when I was little I gobbled up any book with a dog on the cover.

Kjelgaard is a master. This book is a classic "dog story" book. I've read it several times, and can honestly say I've liked it every time. Red is a wonderful dog, and the adventures he and the boy have make for a great read. I'm glad to hear that others have found it enjoyable as well.
