Gee thats nice, she nearly dies from it but who cares as long as Balto and Jenna are mates. Even before Rosie got Diptheria Balto and Jenna had interest in each other.

I'm sure if Rosie were real she'd be so glad she nearly died  , they'd probably have got together anyway sooner or later.

Not true.
Even if Rosy wouldn't get diphtheria, other children will, and that would still prompt Balto to get the medicine back, and Jenna would probably still be grateful about this, and so they become mates.
Just my opinion.

Ok, here's what happened. Rosie got sick, so Balto decided to get the medicine for her since he's such a caring character (also because she was kind to him while others weren't) He got it for her, in turn gaining Jenna's trust, in turn leading to them being mates.
Here's what would've happened if Rosie died form the illness: Balto and Jenna may have beocme mates, but it is unsure of how she would've died from the illness. because Steele didn't make it in time because Balto didn't go to find him? Because Balto got lost? Or what? If Balto died during any part of his jouney, naturally they would not have become mates. Even if he did bring the medicine and Rosie still died, Jenna would have probably trusted him a bit more for trying, but she most likely would've been more remorsful for the girl than in search of Balto's comfort (because she seemed to be a bit uncomfortable around him for some parts, so maybe she didn't know him very well)
Now, if Rosie (or any child for that matter) never had the illness, Jenna and Balto would most likely not have become mates. Because Rosie's illness was what led Balto on his jounrey and in turn led Jenna to have feelings for Balto at all.
Then again, you need to think about the sequel. If Wolf Quest never came out, they would have never been "official" mates.
So there.
