Now, as far as I'd gathered from these forums and other fans, Nikki is the large brown husky of the three, Kaltag is the sandy coloured dog and Star is the little scrawny husky. However, how do people know this? There is never a particular name reference to any of the dogs.
In the trailer which you can access on the DVD the narrator introduces 'Kaltag & Star' with who we know as Nikki and Kaltag getting up out of the snow.

So, who is who?

I guess it was just a small mistake by pronouncing wrong names or adding wrong scene for the clip.
*** the movie says Star the pounched one by kaltag surely Star's Star.
And Kaltag's kaltag.
The Trailer had a small error,but the movie didn't had the same thing.
Maybe the mistake in the trailer can be called ...*gulp* a blooper..

The trailer is wrong, they flubbed it. XD If you look on official character sheets their names are there.

The names of the voice actors against the names of the dogs give it away if you know what those actors sound like from other movies.

In that case, the movie subtitles must have also gotten it wrong, because in the scene where Balto is pulling the crate up the side of the cliff, Nikki says off-screen, "Come on Balto, yous can make it!" The subtitles label this off-screen voice as Kaltag.

I wander why thy name him star without a star print on him?

I had issues with the same thing. I knew who star was but I always got Nikki and Keltag confused until I started surfing BS.

In the trailor, they made a mistake and it wasn't very well put together. Anyways, people think this by looking at the credits and the what voices matched each character.

I wasn't sure who was who. So I judged them by the way they looked. The dog "Kaltag" it a tanish yellow colour like a "Star". I figured that was him. The "Star" character, a dark brown dog, I figured was Kaltag. And the last dog, and Alaskan Klee Kai, was "Nikki". And this is just My way of addressing them. If you don't do the same thats your way, But this is my way.

Thats like calling Boris, Balto. Or either reffering to Jenna as Sylvia, it's just completly incorrect.
Imagine somone coming up to you and thinking you had a face that looks like you would be called Alex or Sam for example so they called you that even thought it isn't your actual name, the person just ends up looking a bit foolish is all. If you originally weren't sure which dog was which (like I didn't) then try and find out who is who, but I can safely tell you that your just gunna confuse youself and a lot of people if you go about reffering to the trio with the wrong names all the time.

On your picture from left to right it goes Star, Kaltag and Nikki.
