Well most say he's an Alaskan malamute but it's also possible that Steele is an Alaskan husky, and no, they're not the same.

Steele is to big and muscular to be an Alaskan Husky. Also some of his traits don't point to malamute. As it stands, Steele has blue eyes, when malamutes only have brown. There is a stronger chance that he is a Siberian Husky, not a malamute and certianly not an Alaskan Husky.

Malamute since they are naturally larger breed then the huskie.

He looks more Malamute than husky, even if he has different colour eyes. If he is a husky i'm not sure what kind he could be though, probably siberian like Rozalyn said.

i say malamute, because that's what he's called in the Balto Juniorization novel. but heck, who knows, because those books screw up details all the time.
