I think so, wolves are mainly a mixture of grey, white and black or just one of these colours, Balto is half-husky so his tan colouring probably came from his dog side, his fur is a greyish brown so I think it's most likely he has some grey from his wolf side and a bit of tan\beige from his dog side.

The color can also difer from their surroundings. Artic wolves are mosly white. The Grey Wolf ( Cainus Lupus ) is greyish and lives in wooded areas mosly. The rare Red Wolf ( Cainus Rufus ) prefers wooded areas also. It depends with the surroundings to help them hunt succsesfuly. :D

Maybe, maybe his father was a tan color and his mother was white... his fur colors mixed?

he could just be a mixed color of tan and white?

Most wolves' fur changes color with the seasons.

The arctic wolfs fur changes very much with the seasons so it can blend in with it's surroundings and therefore it's easier for the wolves to stalk their prey unseen. The grey/timber wolves fur generally does'nt change much at all according to the seasons, at least not dramatically, sometimes the fur goes slightly lighter during the winter so as to blend into the snow, but it'a hardly noticable.

Nightfang is also right, the rare red wolf does prefer wooded areas but the red wolf does'nt live anywhere near Alaska, the red wolf lives nearer Asia/africa and is sometimes referred to as 'the wolf that walks on stilts' because it has unusually long legs for seeing over long grass. The tan/red fur pigmentation does'nt generally run in Grey/Timber wolves, which are the species that live in and around Alaska.

I know we're getting kinda off topic but Red Wolves were also released into Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge located on the web here:

http://www.outer-banks.com/alligator-river/redwolf.asp

Hope to go there this summer. The chances of actually seeing one are slim but it would be cool to say I went ;)

They were pushed really close to extinction, if I remembe right partially due to the fact that they were "mingling" with the coyotes... they closely resemble a coyote in looks I think

and the Arctic Wolf is "Canis Arcticus"
and the Red Wolf is "Canis Rufus"

I find the technical part of wolves so fascinating

hehe

I think his mother is Aniu. If what you say is true, then maybe it is a mix cuz it's most likely that the mother's aniu and the father was brown.

The reason why he has brown fur may be because his father had brown fur. Remember, his father was a husky.

Balto was meant to be brown. Take a look at this link.
