I agree. Yes, the title was completely false (not a sequel; it should have kept its original title), and I thought it filled in the gaps of the original film quite well. Sure, it will never be as good as the original, but for a "midquel," it was made the way a true midquel should be.
I mean, look at it the things that Bambi 2 added to the original:
-
Ronno: To think that if you only read the Bambi books (not the original story) that Disney had written, you would have realized that Ronno was the buck that Bambi fought with for Faline when they were grown up and in love. I thought that Ronno's character helped you see that he was indeed Bambi's rival for Faline's love as fawns. Plus their fight scene in the film was inspired by their fight in the original movie.
-
The Great Prince: He didn't do much in the original, but the "midquel" allowed his character to be revealed. He was regal as a royal should be, and it was obvious that he wanted his son to be just like him. But also he got the chance to grow as a father, and learn about how special his son was to him. You got to see a side of him that the original didn't really get explained since you knew that he took in when his mother was killed.

Umm . . . other than that, it really did stay true to the original, with the backgrounds and the character design. The voices were almost perfect (and that shocked me that some little kids could sound so much like these characters that we all know and love) and the songs were very beautiful and fit the moment.
I think you should give it a try, HYBRID 10 and Nighteyes. Don't judge a book (or a midquel, in this case) by its cover! Yes, I do wish that some classics be left alone, but the idea of a sequel really doesn't sound too bad . . . until you watch the sequel film, of course. Sometimes it's good and other times, it's not. You can't judge a sequel only by other opinions and by the fact that other sequels suck (IYO). Give it a chance (as in watch the film once . . . straight through!)!
And yes, most sequels are made just to help the company become cash-cows.
