This is another fic I'll be working on. In present day New York City (well, it's actually 2005, but close enough) three dogs named Midnight, Sylver, and Rusty visit the Balto statue in Central Park. Then, their owners take them to Alaska to run the Iditarod in honor of this hero, but when they arrive, they discover that history has a tendency to repeat itself. Read on to the first chapter.

It is a cool, fall day in New York City. Three dogs run through Central Park: A gray female wolfdog named Sylver, her red brother named Rusty, and their friend, Midnight, a black and white purebred husky. Each of them are about a year old. Sylver barks happily and come panting to a halt in front of a familiar statue, and the boys follow close behind. She and Rusty smile at the happy canid face on the bronze structure.

"This is it, Midnight. Balto, the hero of Nome. 80 years ago, that wolfdog ran to Nenana and back with the antitoxin, saving the children of Nome. He outwitted and outran Steele, and won the heart of Jenna, and Rusty and I are two of their many descendants."

Midnight looked somewhat uneasy at the mention of Steele's name, as he too was a descendant from Alaska. He kept cool, though, because one false move, and they would give a lecture about betraying ancestors or some other trash like that, and then leave him. Midnight was barely interested in this history stuff, but he was polite and pretended to be curious.

"So, how much wolf blood do you have in you now?"

Rusty took that question.

"Well, our ancestors were a pretty fair split of dog and wolf, so the way I see it, it totals up to about half and half."

"Interesting. Well, I'm from a family of pure-bred, black, huskies that were born to sled race. Speaking of which, in a few weeks, my master's taking me to Alaska to run the Iditarod on his superior racing team. Bet that would be a dream come true for you guys, huh? What are you doing this winter, oh, let me guess, curling up in front of the TV watching the Balto movies all winter?"

"Guess again, Midnight. Rusty and I are headed to Alaska as well. We're going to learn about mushing, and then run the I-dee ourselves."

Midnight was frustrated at his smart-mouth friend, so he quickly changed the subject.

"Do you even know which of Balto's kids you're descended from?" He instantly regretted saying that.

"As a matter of fact, I do: Kodiak, or Kodi for short. And before you say anything, here's a run-down timeline:
Balto: 1922-1933 Mate: Jenna; dog
Kodi: 1926-1940 Mate: Dusty; dog
Tenabi: 1928-1941 Mate: Tuko; wolf
Sumak-"

"Sylver, stop it! I get the point!" Midnight, despite his frustration, couldn't help but laugh. "But still, you seriously remember all of the dates and stuff?"

"Yes. The story of Balto has been passed down through the generations. Even the ridiculous details."

They chuckled, but were interrupted by a young man of about 20 calling Midnight.

"Sorry guys. I gotta go."

"See ya, Midnight! Hey, when are you going to Alaska?"

"November 5th!"

Sylver and Rusty turned to walk home.

"November 5th. That's two weeks from now." Rusty thought as they headed toward the apartment where their owner lived. "We're going the day after that. Alaska sure is going to be a new turn of things." He looked back at the Balto statue, "I hope we can make Balto proud."

I hate having to do double posts, but I have the next chapter. Maybe if I got some comments, that wouldn't be nescessary. Anyhow, read on.

"Come on, Rusty. We're going to be late home. Sonya's waiting."
When they arrive home, Sonya, their owner, greets them. She is a young woman of about 19 and has long, sweeping red hair. She is the granddaughter of Rosy, and the older sister of Rebecca, who owns Blaze. Rebecca is 17 now, and her gray husky Blaze is about 10. Rebecca has blond hair.
"Hey Sylver. Hey Rusty. I've been looking for you."
She pets them, and Blaze, an older dog now, came up to say hi to his grandpups. Blaze ended up with one of Balto's descendants, and that became Sylver and Rusty's mother. His voice was warm and friendly, but inside, he was the same, vibrant pup from 10 years ago in 1995 when he, Rebecca and Rosy visited the statue, and he and Rebecca were taught the story of Balto. He had accomplished his dream, which was to run the Iditarod when he was two, but, as Rosy predicted, he needed a lot of practice.
"Hi you two. Playing with Midnight again?"
"Yeah. We went to Central Park to visit that statue, and Sylver drove Midnight crazy with her history lesson."
"Really? Did she mention me?"
Sylver cleared her throat.
"Grandpa, stop talking about me like I'm not here!"
Blaze chuckled.
"Say, are you looking foward to going to Alaska to do the Iditarod?"
"Yeah!"
"Maybe I could help you train."
"Thanks Grandpa. We need all the help we can get, especially since Midnight is going there too."
"I'll get to it tomorrow. In the meantime, why don't we watch Balto?"
Rusty winked at his grandfather, and nosed around a stack of DVDs. He found the right one and held it up to Sonya, wagging his tail happily.
"Okay Rusty, I'll put it in for you."
She slipped the disk into the DVD player and pressed play at the main menu. The three dogs watched the movie together, and always giggled at the beginning, remarking that Blaze was very cute as a puppy.
"What? I'm not cute now?"
They laughed through the whole movie.

All right. Here's the next chapter.

It was the day before Sylver and Rusty were going to Alaska. They were ready for the trip, as Blaze had trained them well. The young wolfdogs walked with their grandfather, grandmother, father, and mother, and talked about the upcoming experience.

"So, are any of you guys coming?"

"We wish we could," their dark red father replied, "but we can't. It's too expensive for all of us to come. We're just going to stay with a good friend of Sonya's."

"That's too bad. Do you think that the dogs and people in Nome will know who we are?"

"They might, and I hope so. You take after Balto and Jenna so much."

"But still, Midnight is going to be there, and you know how he is, always trying to impress a crowd. And if it means saying bad stuff about his friends, he'll do it."

Their mother, Kova, looked a lot like Aleu and was still only about 3 years old. She stated suspiciously,

"I've always had a problem with that Midnight guy. Something seems very familiar about him. I'm thinking we're not the only ones who have ancestors that are sled dogs, if you catch my drift."

"That's crazy! Who could possibly fall for Steele like that?"

"A gullible, shallow, purebred brat."

Sylver and Rusty snorted with laughter, and as it died down, Sylver challenged,

"You still got some racing spirit, right?"

"Yeah," they all replied in unison.

"Well then, first one home gets dibs on the cookies!"

They yelped and hollared in happiness all the way home.

When they arrived, they were so tired, they fell asleep as soon as they collapsed onto the bed, but by morning, the two siblings were hyped and ready for their great adventure. They brought all of the items they wanted for when they got to Nome, which was the three Balto movies, a photo of the statue, Jenna's actual bandana, (passed down through the ages) and a black and white, old photograph of Balto bearing the inscription found on the statue. After a tearful goodbye to their parents and grandparents, Sylver and Rusty got into the car with Sonya and were soon boarding the plane to Nome, Alaska. This was going to be the greatest adventure of their lives, and they hoped to make their split heritage proud.

All right! The next chapter is up. Originally, this was just a side project and I wasn't sure if I would finish, but I'm really enjoying this one!

The plane touched down in Nome, Alaska. Sonya rented a house to stay in as soon as they arrived. Right away, Sylver and Rusty began introducing themselves to the dogs in town. Rusty had his eye on a fluffy white samoyed named Debbie, but his sister told him that fluffy, pedigreed, fancy-pants females are a definite stay-away. They both noticed a pair of border collies, a brother and sister. Their names were Jake and Lika. Jake was red, and Lika was bluish gray. Sylver and Rusty bickered over who was going to say hi to them first.

"Come on Sylver, it was your idea. Just say something to them."

"You can't just walk up to a purebred dog without something interesting to work at first! You gotta do something, get into action."

"What can we do? I don't see any hats that people dropped. It's now or never."

"Hmph."

"Fine. I'll go."

Rusty nervously approached the collies. He nervously glanced at Lika.

"Hi. I'm Rusty. I'm from New York and my sister and I came to run the Iditarod."

Lika smiled.

"Hi Rusty. I'm Lika, and this is my brother, Jake. You look kinda wolfish."

"Thank you. And yes, my sister and I are part wolf. You'll never believe this, but we are actually descendants of Balto."

"Wow. Can Jake and I meet your sister?"

"Hey, Sylver! Come here for a moment?"

"Yeah? What are their names?"

After hearing Sylver's voice, Jake turned around, and liked what he saw. He nervously stammered,

"Hi. You're Sylver, right? Rusty's sister?"

She nodded. Lika remarked excitedly,

"They're going to run the Iditarod this winter!"

"I heard. Are you really descendants of Balto?"

"Sure thing. If we were lying, would we have Jenna's bandana?"

Sylver pulled out the orange piece of cloth and fastened it around her neck. She grinned happily. No one had noticed Midnight coming up from behind. His voice had become somewhat sultry and sinister in a way, and he leaned over and eyed Lika with an envious expression.

"Glad you could make it, Wolf and Wolfier. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to talk to your new friends."

He pulled the border collies into an alley, and pinned them sternly against a wall.

"Listen to me. Both of you. Those wolf pups over there, they're lyin. no relationship to Balto other than the fact that they're the kin of filthy, mangy, snarling primitives! Now, before I show you my perfect sled skills, let me show you an old family keepsake."

He fluffed out his chest fur, and beneath it was a heavy collar decorated with golden colored metal and fastened with a large buckle. He beamed in pride, but instead of looking down to amazed and impressed faces, he saw shocked and angry ones. Lika growled,

"What is there to be proud of? That collar belongs to Steele's family. You are a liar and a lowlife, just like the rest of them! Sylver and Rusty have a heritage to be proud of, coming straight from a hero. But all you have is the fact that your family history is clogged with lies, tricks, and attempts at murder!"

"Have it your way! Maybe you don't believe me, but everyone else will!"

How is it so far? I need comments to keep this running.

Very nicely done, wolf sister. Quite an original idea!
Keep it up! I look forward to more!

It's still me, I just changed my username, that's all. Here's some more of the story.

"You've got to be kidding! Midnight was our friend!"

"You should have listened to what I said, Rusty."

"Come on, Sylver, you were the one who told him that we were related to Balto!"

Jake cut in,

"Both of you, stop! We're not going to solve anything bickering like this. You've got proof, Jenna's bandana."

"But that doesn't prove anything. It's just a piece of orange cloth."

"But Lika, it's the best we got. Either we try this out, or let history repeat itself, and for the fourth time, for the record."

Rusty said this with much more confidence than he had, and the group of four dogs sighed.

"Alright. Rusty and I will try to go and clear our names with any other dogs that Midnight might have told. Jake, Lika, try and find Midnight."

They nodded and walked off in seperate directions, and glumly sulked back to the same spot several hours later.

"No one believed us."

"And Midnight just vanished. We searched every alley and corner of this town, and no sign of him."

"We're sorry we couldn't help, but Lika and I have to go. We'll see you tomorrow though."

"Alright."

But as Jake and Lika walked home, they heard voices coming from the boiler room...
