How to run Wolf on Windows NT/XP using DosBox
DosBox is a 486 PC emulator that runs Dos thus allowing you to use older games that don’t play nicely with newer operating systems such as Windows XP. Running Wolf using DosBox is very simple and once you read this short tutorial you’ll be up and running in no time, and if not just PM me and I’ll help you out!
Step One Download and install DosBox from
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 (NOTE: You may have to be a system administrator under Windows XP to install DosBox although I haven’t tried installing it under a limited user account.)
Step Two Download and unzip Wolf from
http://www.lakoswolf.com/Wolf.zip
Step Three Once you have Wolf unzipped into a folder I
would strongly suggust moving it to the root directory (first level of folders) of your hard drive (commonly labled local Disk C) Although you can put it in whatever folder you wish; moving the wolf directory to the first level of your hard drive ie. Right inside your hard drive not buried inside folders will make it easier to run in DosBox!
Step Four Go to your
start menu > All Programs > DosBox and start the application
You’ll be greeted by
welcome to the ancient world of DOS also known as life before Windows! Heh
You’ll notice the Z:\> Prompt instead of the familiar c:\> prompt. Right now DosBox doesn’t have access to the Wolf folder on our C: drive we have to mount it first. (Don’t worry it’s really easy, if you put your wolf folder in your root directory!)
Just type the following:
Mount c “c:\wolf” (without the quotes of course!) where c is the drive letter we’re mounting in DosBox and “C:\wolf” is the directory on our hard drive where the Wolf application is stored. After you press ENTER DosBox should mention that
Drive C is mounted as local directory “c:\wolf\” (or whatever directory you put the Wolf folder in)
Step Five But wait! I still have a Z:\ prompt! Well you’re right you do, we have to change directories first! Simply type in
“c:” (without the quotes of coruse) and press ENTER, your Z:\> prompt will now read as C:\> then to start the game all you have to do is type
"Wolf" (Need I even mention no quotes? LOL) and the game will start!
WAIT READ ON THERE'S MORE!
Now, how many people want to do that every time you play the game? I don’t and you won’t have to after you make this simple change to the DosBox config file. Open your
start menu > All Programs > DosBox > DosBox.conf Once you have the config file open scroll all the way down to where is says
” [autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.” Paste the following in the blank space just below:
mount c c:\wolf
c:
wolf
*****NOTE***** If you chose to put the Wolf folder in another directory other then the root level of your primary hard drive (C: ) then you’ll need to change the mount directory to match whatever directory you put the Wolf folder in!
You can delete the word wolf at the end if you don’t want Wolf to start automatically when you run DosBox! Now you should be able to play Wolf anytime!
DON’T change anything else unless you’re sure you know what you’re doing!
If something isn’t working or you have trouble setting this up don’t hesitate to E-mail or PM me about it I’d be more then happy to help you out!
