I don't think you should be so adamant about your students. Each one is different. Some are good at math and some are not. When I didn't understand math when I was a student, I didn't do it either, because I didn't see the point. I always used this site to solve some homework and was satisfied with even the lowest scores. This is normal, because I succeeded in other subjects and was the best there. Everyone gets something.

Some things can really just be rote, but that method has a problem... You have to understand the math. Otherwise, there's no way you can get out of it and solve complex problems.
