Honestly I have nothing against Wolf Quest. On the contrary, I enjoyed it a lot. But, it seems like a lot of you never run out of negative things to say about it. So, I have decided to write a means of improving upon what's already there, but exactly how, you'll just have to find out as the story goes on. My first chapter is ready, so enjoy!

Balto ran across an icy tundra, with a big black raven in hot pursuit. The ice around him was crumbling, and he had to slip frantically around to avoid being crushed by the frozen boulders. As another iceburg fell, the ground cracked and buckled beneath the wolfdog, tossing him a few feet above the ground. Balto splashed down on top of an ice floe, catching his breath, which was visible in the frigid air. The raven cawed behind him, so he began running again, leaping over the gaps between the ice floes. He stopped in his tracks as he saw a pack of wolves ahead, yellow eyes glowing. Balto frantically looked back at the raven and ahead at the wolves, as the piece of ice he was standing on floated closer to the pack. A voice rang out in his head, and the dream ended.

"Balto! Balto, wake up!"

"Wha- What?"

He was being shaken awake by Jenna, and was laying next to the now extinguished fireplace in Rosy's house.

"I'm thinking you know very well what!" she happily said. "You just fell asleep before it happened!"

"Before what happened?"

"Puppies, Balto!" Jenna chuckled. "We're parents now! You want to see them?"

"Yeah!"

She gestured toward a basket, where six newborn puppies crawled around under the wrinkled blanket. Four of them looked like their mother, vibrant red. One was brown, with hints of both red and gray. The sixth was grayish tan. Jenna lay down in the basket and she and Balto talked.

"How's Boris?"

"Well, let's just say he's taking a well needed break from Muk and Luk."

"Why's that"

"They're not exactly cubs anymore. Muk asked Boris why he started drooling when he saw a female polar bear, and I walked in on Luk picking flowers and trying out something Muk calls "Wordless Poetry."

They both laughed at this.

"So, basically, they're more mature, more independant, and Boris is adapting well to it?"

"Yeah, I'd say that's a good summary," Balto replied.

They laughed again.

"May I ask why you were shouting and thrashing in your sleep?"

"Oh, it's nothin'. Just a bad dream."

"You mean, THE DREAM? The one with the raven and wolves?"

"Yeah, that one."

Jenna dozed off, and Balto thought carefully.

"Could my dream mean something? If it does, what?"

Despite his troubled mind, he fell asleep next to Jenna, the pups' gentle wimpering filling his ears.

Yeah, it's boring now, but the adventure hasn't started yet.

Thanks for the comments. This was my first fanfiction, so I didn't know how it would turn out. Here's more.

The next day, Balto and Jenna decided to name their pups. Jenna began,

"I know good names for these three," she said, pointing at the three in question: two of the regular red ones and the masked red one. "Dingo, Saba, and Lena, after my father, mother, and sister respectively." She and Balto beamed at the newly named puppies, and Balto continued,

"Well, I call this one Kodiak, or Kodi for short," as he pointed to the last remaining red one. "Also, if you're bent on naming your pups after your family, don't think I won't join in." Balto grinned as he spoke. "The brown one will be Kiro, after my father."

"Okay, let's both decide on a name for the gray one."

"Hmm. Kodi was named after the Kodiak islands, so how about Aleu for the Aleutian islands?"

"That sounds really pretty. Balto, this is the happiest day of my life. Six new puppies, our new life together, and a fresh start after all we've been through."

She was surprised to see Balto with his head down, silent tears welling up in his eyes.

"Sorry about that, Jenna. I just miss them."

"Who?"

"My parents. My dad was killed by a wolf who was jealous of him because my mother chose Father instead of him, and when I was 5 months old, my mother just vanished without a trace. I.. I don't even remember her name."

"Oh, Balto, I'm so sorry. I had some trouble with my parents, too. One day when I was young, my father went out on a sled mission and never came back. He and the team were attacked by a black dog who turned out to be Steele's father, Stone. Mom went out to look for him, and she too disappeared. Stone had found her out in the woods searching for the team, dognapped her, and..and, forced her to have pups with him. He then killed her after my half-siblings were born, but only one lived, and that was Steele. He lived in the wild with Stone before coming to Nome. I just happened to catch his eye, and he didn't know that I was related to him at all. And then Lena heard what happened, so she just went and killed herself."

They shared a moment of silence, and cried together.

"Well, it has been hard, but after all we've been through we just need to look to the future, and not let the past haunt us. It's a beautiful day, and Jenna, the sun of our time together is just rising."

"Thanks, Balto. You're right. We can't let the past ruin all that's ahead of us."

Time passed, and the pups grew to eight weeks old. Their destinies would unfold soon, and both parents knew that.

I like it. Love what you're doing wolf_sister. I personally liked WQ, and you're giving quite the alternate storyline for it.

It'll work along similar lines, but with a few twists and changes in personalities to be more appealing and match the original movie more, but I'm glad to hear that there is someone who like Balto 2. grincolonp.gif

I agree - this is really good! I like the way that you still kept the main events and style of WQ and made it more . . . . likeable. So far, it's great! Keep it up, I like where this is going!

I had started on the next chapter, but I minimized it and the window was closed by a certain six-year old who I find quite annoying, so sorry for the delay! Here's more:

The pups had grown to eight weeks old, and a few words to decribe them may be: adventurous, playful, mischeivious, and free-spirited. Balto constantly took them out on nature walks, and a few popular places include a few of the places Balto went on his antitoxin sled quest. But it was spring now, and the snow was gone, and even Balto admitted it looked strange, especially after exploring every inch of this forest just in case he needed to take the same path again.

"See these scratch marks on the trees? I used them to mark the trail so I could find everyone, but..." He pointed to some other scratch marks, "A dog named Steele didn't want me to come back, so he put other marks on the trees that looked like mine so I would get lost. But guess what? It didn't work!"

Aleu and Kiro were the most excited, popping up with questions all over the place:
"How did you find your way?"
"Someone told me you outran an avalanche!"
"Someone else told me you dodged falling icicles!"
"Why didn't Steele like you?"

Aleu's question pierced Balto like a bullet. "They don't know yet!?" he thought furiously, while the two of them scowled and tapped their paws, waiting for answers. In the meantime, Kodi teased them for asking so many questions,

"You gotta stop askin so many questions! It's dumb!"

Kiro was ready for that, and had a response packed up. "Oh yeah? Then why does question begin with quest? Huh!?"

Obviously defeated, Kodi fell silent. Aleu gave her brother a high-paw, and started shouting out for her siblings to hear,

"I taught him that one! And now he owes me!" she sinsonged.

"Phew. They forgot about the questions." Balto thought. "Alright guys. It's time to go home. Jenna said we should be back by sunset, because there's something she needs to tell you."

When they got home, Jenna was waiting for them.

"Pups, there is something important that I need to tell you. Next week is when you get adopted, or in other words, a human takes you home with them. You will be able to see your siblings and parents afterwards, but you will have a new human, which can take getting used to."

Aleu had questions already. "What if we don't get adopted?"

"Oh. You will. It just takes longer for some than others."

As the puppies went to bed, and Jenna and Balto followed soon after, Balto couldn't help but worry a little. Aleu and Kiro were sweet puppies, but humans usually think on the surface, and believe that if it looks like a wolf, it's dangerous. Adoption day was fast approaching, and he had a feeling it wouldn't go smoothly.

Sorry that I haven't posted more for a while, but I can give the reason in three simple words: I hate school.

It was in the middle of a warm spring night, and Balto was sleeping with Jenna on the porch of her house. He tossed and turned in his sleep as his mind returned to the tundra where he had experienced the nightmare eight weeks before.

He ran quickly with the raven in hot pursuit. The black bird cawed loudly and dipped down to attack Balto, so he constantly had to swerve and dodge to avoid being impaled with the sharp, wicked beak. In an instant, Balto found himself staring into the face of a fox, who batted her eyes and a sultry look adorned her face. He turned and ran a different way, this time right into three wolverines, who snarled and advanced toward him, red eyes glowing. Again, the wolfdog changed his course, but a bear was blocking his path. He saw that the fox and the wolverines were forming a ring around the half-breed, advancing menacingly. With nowhere else to go, Balto darted under the bear. He then felt the ground tremble under him, and before he knew it, a huge wooden pole shot into the air, carrying Balto along for the ride. He jumped down and circled the structure, which turned out to be a totem pole. He had been standing atop the head of a huge raven carving at the top, and below it was a fox, a wolverine, a bear, a caribou, and a wolf. Balto recited the animals to himself, and as he quietly whispered, "wolf", a familiar white lupine stood before him and howled. The wolf vanished in the wind, and Balto woke.

Jenna was gone, and Boris was standing in front of Balto, wings crossed, and a suspicious look on his face.

"What is it, Boris?"

"Nothing, except that ven you sleep, you flop around like herring on boat deck."

"It's no big deal. Hey, I have to go to the beach to meet Jenna and the pups. Do you want to come? It'll be the last day we spend with our kids before they get adopted."

"I'd like to, but I cannot. Bears are most likely daring one another to eat sea urchin again. Must keep eye on them."

"Okay. See you around, Boris."

Balto left Jenna's house, and trotted through town towards the beach. He said hi to his old sled-mates and his other friends from around town on his way there. He knew that he had found his destination when five red specks, a brown one, and a gray one were visible on the beach. Balto ran to them.

"Hey Balto. I was wondering when you'd show up. The pups have been waiting to see you all morning."

"Sorry about that. Hey, can I talk to you for a minute? I'm usually not one to worry, but Aleu and Kiro are, how can I word this, different. They may not get adopted."

"What? But you have more wolf than them, and everyone is okay with you!"

"But that's because I did something. Remember the way people treated me before I did what I did?"

"That didn't stop you from doing the right thing and helping everyone. I'm sure that Aleu and Kiro can learn a lot from you."

"Thanks. You're absolutely right, but I do think that they should know, so there isn't a nasty surprise later. Aleu! Kiro! Could you come here for a minute?"

The two pups halted their play and ran to their parents.

"Hi Dad. What's up?"

"Aleu was chewing on my ear again!"

"Was not!"

"Was to! Look!" Kiro pointed to his left ear which had tooth marks on it.

"Well, I have something important to tell both of you. I'm half-wolf, so you have some wolf blood in you as well."

"What does that mean?" Kiro asked. "How does that make us different from everyone else?"

"Most humans don't like wolves, and I was treated very badly before I did something good. They realized that I wasn't one of those snarling beasts that people think of when they hear the word "wolf", but it might not be the same for you guys."

"Says who? I'm special! Not every dog can do this!" Aleu howled loudly.

"Thanks for tellin' us Dad, but we'll be fine!"

They went back to their play and Balto siged and shook his head, but he couldn't help smiling. The truth was out, they knew, and everything was to go perfectly after all. But Balto was soon to find out that cockyness is worse than concern.

Suspensful, I know! So stay tuned!

Wow, great job.
Love the added detail with the pup's arguments.

In your first part of this i noticed just one small detail you got wrong. The wolf pack had red eyes. Not yellow.

Keep it up and get the next part to us ASAP

Actually, they were yellow. Check out this screenshot. http://baltosource.timduru.org/img/gallerie2/7.jpg

Here's some more of the story.

Balto headed back from the beach with Jenna and the pups. Jenna came up to him and softly reminded him,

"Get some sleep, because tomorrow's the big day. We're gonna be right outside the boiler room first thing in the morning."

"I will. Thanks Jen."

They fell asleep on the porch, lit by a flickering lamp. Morning came too quickly, but Balto came and met them by the boiler room anyway.

"Hey Dad! I was wondering when you'd come!"

"Hi Dingo!"

"I'm going to be the first one adopted!"

"No me!"

"Are you kidding me, Little miss Scruffy?"

"Who are you calling Scruffy?"

Balto rolled his eyes.

"Here they go again," he thought.

"Guys! Let's all do what Dad taught me! Awwooooo!"

The others followed Aleu's lead, joining in her howl. Jenna looked at Balto with slight annoyance.

"And you worry about them being part wolf? When did you teach them that?"

"Well, at first I was too busy thinking about what was going on just then. I didn't think about adoption, and I thought it would be fun."

"Well, it's just making it worse."

"What about what you told me yesterday?"

"I was being cautiously optimistic. Not careless."

"Oh come on. What's the worst that can happen?"

"I think you know. There are some people who hate wolves so much, they will go to any lengths to make sure they are gone. I don't want that to happen."

"Okay okay. Yesterday you were acting the opposite way. What's gotten into you?" Jenna gave him the cold shoulder. "Alright. Pups, your mother wants you to stop howling."

"Awwww, man. Dad, it's fun!"

Lena was hopping up and down excitedly.

"Here comes a human! He'll pick me for sure because of my cute eyes!"

"Whatever," Kodi scowled.

The human was a young boy with his father. The pups were all watching anxiously, and then Dingo was the first one to leave the box, as he had just found his new home. He called over the boy's shoulder,

"Told you I would be the first one adopted!"

"Bye Dingo!"

"Hope to see you soon!"

"Good luck little bro!"

With that, the day had begun. People were spilling out of homes and shops to begin the day, and children began playing in the street. Rosy came out of her house to watch the pups get adopted. She called to Jenna,

"Hi girl! Did anyone get adopted yet?"

Jenna nodded.

"Which one?"

Jenna gestured to the box.

"Dingo?"

Jenna barked happily.

"Balto! Good to see you again!"

The young girl hugged Balto.

Another person was coming, a girl with black hair.

"Hi Rosy!" she said. "Are these your puppies? They're so cute!"

"Yeah. They're mine. You want one?"

"Of course. Mom!"

Her mother came, and exclaimed, "What cute puppies!"

"These are Rosy's pups. Jenna had them. Can I have the gray one, please?"

"Absolutely not! That's a wolfdog! Take a red one instead."

The girl gave Rosy a sad look, and picked up Lena from the box. Aleu looked sadly at Balto. Her eyes said one thing: "Why?"

As the girl and her mother walked off, the mother asked Rosy,

"What mangy creature could possibly be the father of those puppies?"

"That 'mangy creature' saved my life last year. His name's Balto!" Rosy looked at Jenna, Balto, and the pups with an expression of apology. "Sorry about that. Tina's mom is really mean, especially about animals."

As the day went on, there were similar reactions from parents about both Aleu and Kiro. All Rosy could do was shrug and say,

"I just don't get it. I thought everyone loved Balto."

By the end of the day, only Aleu and Kiro were left. Rosy had gone home.

"Come on Balto. Let's go home. I know Aleu and Kiro haven't been adopted, but we can try to get them adopted later."

"Come on. We can't give up yet. What if I gave up when I was at the bottom of that cliff? Rosy wouldn't be here if I had given up."

"Well, it's late. We could try again some other time."

With that, Aleu and Kiro walked home sadly with their parents. Both were sad and angry.

"How could this happen, Aleu?"

"I don't know. I guess some people just stink. They don't know how special we really are."

"Maybe our place is somewhere we didn't expect."

"Like where?"

"With those who understand us, with those who are like us."

"I don't know Kiro. Only time will tell."
