I know you guys listen to a lot of music (who doesn't?)... but what about the people who write it?

I'm thinking more along the lines of classical/soundtrack music... who is your favorite composer? I don't want to hear any pop answers. ;)

Soundtrack wise it's very hard for me to pick... I'm thinking James Newton Howard, for his varied and haunting scores. I used to have a lot more respect for James Horner before I realized that all his scores were exactly the same. :(

Over from Japan, I also love Ooshima Michiru solely for their Fullmetal Alchemist soundtrack - some of the most beautiful underscoring I've heard.

Classical-wise, I'm a fan of Dvorak and Shostakovich. And Barber. :)

I thought James Howard did a very good job as a composer. I really liked his music from "Signs".

Classical-wise, I like Frederick Chopin. My favorite piece is "Fantasy Impromptu".

Forgive me, but for what your talking about I don't know a lot of the names of the composers, but I can tell you what the music is from.

The composer of the Final Fantasy games (I know his name, I'm just having a brain fart), he is by far one of the best composers to ever walk the face of the earth. Same for Kingdom Hearts, gotta love that soundtrack. Then of course while I'm on a square soft/enix tangent, the Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross sound tracks are fenominal. Basicly all of the composers for square soft/enix's sound tracks are fantasitic.

As far as movies, Pirates of the Caribbean all the way. One of the most masterful sound tracks ever, the guy who composed this is a genious. As I said in another topic, I love the music from DragonHeart, espesicaly what I consider the main theme (the big slow orchestral piece). Lord of the Rings, the composer for that was great too.

For a name I actualy know, John Williams, he is just freaking awsome. Jurassic Park, StarWars, etc, he write some of the best stuff. Not to mention he writes the best brass lines (go brass!)

As far as classical composers, I don't know a lot, but I do know what I've played that I like (full orchestras rock!). Beethoven just plain rocks, and I've done some of his stuff. I've also don't some Franz Schubert, his Unfinished Symphony no.8, now that was a fun piece.

My favorite of James Newton Howard's is Disney's "Atlantis". I think that's my favorite score ever.

Nobuo Uematsu wrote the Final Fantasy music. :) It's quite amazing, I agree... I love many of the FF themes scattered throughout the series. I've never actually heard Chrono Trigger's music, but I hear it's also good.

PotC does have a good soundtrack, catchy and powerful, even if it's a bit repetitive. Klaus Badelt did lots of collaborations with Hans Zimmer, so you can definitely hear the influence. ;)

Howard Shore scored some pretty famous movies before LOTR, so it's kind of odd that he's only now getting so much recognition.

Sure, Williams writes good brass stuff because it's lyrical, but have you seen the woodwind parts? Insanity! XD The pages are pretty much black.

Aaaand, I love Schubert's 'Unfinished'. Quite an eerie first movement. :)

yeah, Schubert's 'Unfinished', the first movement is just plain awsome. By far one of the best songs I've ever played.

and yeah, I'm kinda brass obsessed, what do you expect, I play trumpet  . but he does write really good woodwind parts as well.

Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill 2)
James Newton Howard (Signs)
Randy Edelman (DragonHeart)

I think these people are all masterminds!!

That is a wonderful question, the only music I am interested in is Calssical... I listen to nothing else!!

Well, I really enjoy Leonard Bernstein's Candide Overture. My favorites for small Chamber Orchestra are: Lennie Neihaus (Crossbow Overture - it is my most favorite of all for Chamber Music) and Elliot DelBorgo (Variants on a Korean Folk Song - I actually saw him the other day at a concert, he was the Conductor, and I still cannot believe it... I am so pleased to have seen one of my favorite composers! It si very rare for someone to actually get to see the composer of their favorite piece).

ASlso, I love The Moldau, by Bedrich Smetana. It was one of his Tone Poems, and I just love the tune, it si fun to play also!! If you read my introduction to myself "Hi, my name is Kodiwolf and I am a yound pup here on the forums," then you will see a whole list of my favorite pieces.

Great question!! Thanks so much! :D

You're pretty awesome, Kodiwolf! It's so nice to hear from another classical fan! Do you play an instrument or just enjoy listening?

Candide Overture is an overall fun piece. I haven't come across a specific DelBorgo fan before... though Variations on a Korean Folk Song is a staple in the symphonic band repertoire - everyone I know has performed it several times! Where did you get to see him? The only time I got to see one of my favorite composers was when James Newton Howard came in to talk to an orchestra of mine... but back then I was too young to really know or respect his music. :(

I agree, even though New World Symphony is WAY overplayed, it's one of my favorites. (It also helps being an English horn player). I'm not familiar with Crossbow Overture or To The Summit... I'll have to seek them out. Thanks!
