Henry, the character who you play as, is a former animator from the Joey Drew Studios. Thirty years after his departure, Henry receives a letter, which reads:
"Dear Henry, it seems like a lifetime since we worked on cartoons together. 30 years really does slip by, doesn't it? If you're in town, come visit the old workshop. There's something I need to show you. Your best pal, Joey Drew". After the letter appears on screen, the game begins. To Henry's surprise the studio is abandoned and in shambles, however he remains humble. He eventually comes across the ink machine, which was supposedly used to bring 2D characters to life, and activates it. Upon walking back to the machine, the Ink Demon pops up from behind the now boarded up room and pushes Henry down onto the floor. In an attempt to flee the studio that's now flooding with ink, he dashes for the door but ends up falling through a weak spot in the floor. The journey begins.

They're made entirely of ink and crawl along the floor and follow you until you kill them. In chapter two, you end up in two mini battles with the searchers before you can proceed.
