I was browsing through Vimeo and stumbled across this awesome documentary (more like someone with a video camera lol) of the film while it was being worked on! Pretty cool!

Just as a note, a good chunk of this documentary contains drinking and chatter, which really isn't that overly interesting. If you would rather just see the backgrounds being worked on, go by these times:
0:00-00:33 11:01 and the rest of the video

Wow an excellent find Mighty thank you for sharing. That is Hans Bacher who filmed it - he was the background supervisor for the movie and, last time I spoke to him, he said he had over 24 hours of footage shot on his camcorder sitting in his draws at home. I offered to arrange for them to be edited and put together for fans but he was worried about who owns the rights to Balto and what they might have to say about it so sadly declined. I am really pleased that he has posted something though - just look at how big some of those backgrounds are!

Another interesting fact that can be seen in the video: lots of folk are very quick to say that no cels were made for the movie because it was all digital. This is not true, many cels were in fact made and hand painted in the traditional way in order to test colours or visualise the scene on a background. Quite a few of these are on display in the video and I would love to know where they all went...

I think a lot of the fans have moved on from the community, and the newer fans (not that I'm saying all of them do) just don't feel the same way about the films us older fans do. I'm twenty, and I grew up with the Balto movies, so they will always be something special to me.

You're forgetting me, Ac. lol For shame!

I've been a bit busy with site building on The Secret of NIMH Source, and another source yet to be approved. But I think you should know where I stand on the Balto thing, and especially the real history of the serum run.

It's a long story, and one that would be better off left alone, but a lot of drama and trolling has gone down in the past few years, driving users away. There's also what I said previously about newer fans (although this is just a personal thought rather than a fact) not having the same appreciation about the films us older fans do (again, I'm not saying that they aren't truly fans, but I get the impression that most of them just like Balto because he's part wolf).

Oh wow, what a great find! Balto will always be one of the top fave movies for me, so this is incredibly interesting to watch. Being a sucker for behind-the-scenes/production process and art helps as well xD
Balto most certainly needs more of such videos or any other types of production process presentation. It is a very well made animated movie, and it surely is always great to see how it all came to what we know now :)
