History: Misty was born in the US, shortly after her heavily pregnant mother was imported from Puerto Rico. Her master loved the mare and her tiny filly with all his heart, and Misty grew up knowing only love and kindness. Besides his horses, her master’s other passion was his garden. Beautiful, colourful blooms grew in his carefully tended garden, and twice a week he’d carefully pick some of the flowers, hitch Misty’s dam to a small cart and drive into market, where he’d sell his blooms. The money he made wasn’t very much, but it was enough to keep himself and his horses healthy. Misty adored the flowers in her master’s garden. Seeing her enthusiasm for the plants, her master chuckled kindly and decided to pin a couple of blooms to her forelock. The little filly was delighted. The fragrant flowers made her feel elegant and happy, and she was overjoyed that she could carry their sweet scent around with her, since she adored the smell of the blooms. Every time the flowers faded and fell out, her master would cut some fresh blooms and secure them in her forelock. In this way, little Misty wore for fresh flowers in her mane for 9 months of the year. When winter came and all the flowers died, Misty always became sad, and longed for the spring again. As she grew up Misty’s master taught her to pull his flower cart, and soon she was taking her mother’s place to market. The hustle and bustle of market made Misty nervous, but she felt safe with her master nearby. Even so, she always loved it when it was time to go home to her stable and her master’s garden. For 8 years Misty pulled her master’s cart to market, taking it in turns with her mother. Her smooth gaited walk meant they could get to the market speedily, but the flowers remained secure and un-bruised in the low cart. A normal horse’s trot could well have bounced the flowers straight out of the cart, so her master was very grateful for Misty and her mother’s smooth pace. In fact, that was the reason he’d bought them in the first place. But one day at market disaster struck. Misty’s master was called away from his cart by another man. The man took him some way from the cart and the mare, and whilst her master was occupied another man crept forward, untied Misty’s harness and began to lead her away. With a start Misty realised she was being taken away from her beloved master, and she began to scream and panic. Her master heard her cries and came running, but the crowds and the man he’d been talking to blocked his way whilst the other man quickly led Misty through the busy market. Reaching a horse and cart, he tied Misty to the back of the cart, climbed up into it, took up the reins and urged his own horse into a trot. Poor Misty was forced to follow, leaving the market and her beloved master behind. The Paso Fino mare was taken a long way from the market, until finally she was untied and led into a barn. Too tired to fight back, Misty was shut in for the night. When morning broke the men took her out of her stall, intending to sell her. But as they reached up to remove the flowers from her forelock Misty reared up in terror and rage, breaking the rope halter. All of a sudden she was free and she wheeled away from the men, bolting back down the road and away from the ranch. Misty tried to make her way back to the market to find her old master, but she’d come so far the night before that she quickly became lost on her own. For days she wandered, alone and scared, until she eventually resigned herself to a life on her own.
