I've been spending some time looking at movie fan art, and I thought it would be a good idea to start a topic to share some exceptional Balto fan art with the rest of you.

First is "Heritage of the Wolf" by Psychopomp16 on DeviantArt.

This person did a great job on the background, the crate, the lantern, the rocks, the weather effects, and the white wolf's body and the tossed fur. And Balto's body. There can be no denying this. It's excellent work.

Where it went awry is in Balto's tossed fur. The texture and effect is different, and doesn't look realistic. And doesn't look the same as the white wolf's. That detracted from the overall drawing, as good as it is otherwise. They went a bit overboard there...and the fur, the way it's "laying", almost looks like agitated scales rather than tossed fur.

Yeah, I've been this one before. Aniu and the background are beautiful, but Balto looks funny to me. He seems squished or something, and there is, like JC said, that fur.

Other than that this is a great piece!

Well, on top of these things, the fur on both characters doesn't always follow the flow of the storm. It just moves in random directions. With the force of the wind, it should be tossed and blown in but one direction...not randomly.

It's White Wolf/Aniu that seems rather weird and unproportional to me here, but it is indeed a great artwork with so many details.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of this type of drawing fur because, as you said, most of the time it looks like "furry scales" xD

Now for a piece by hecatehell (on DeviantArt), otherwise known as hécate on Balto Source. So, you may have seen this before. I like a lot of her work.

I like this one because it is an original depiction of the real Balto. By kotenokgaff (another one from DeviantArt). It could almost be an illustration for a book.

Um...I don't mean this in a disrespectful or disdainful way, but why are you promoting other peoples' art work? Some of these people, as far as I know (except for Hecate) don't even belong to Animation Source.

I mean, I get that you like the stuff, and some of it really isn't bad. But unless you're serving as a marketing agent for them, I don't know that I see why doing this has any real value.

Art is about capturing the spirit of the subject so not necessarily about obeying the laws of physics. I think that the first piece captures the emotion and the beauty of that scene perfectly - very nice and thank you for sharing.

The second one is equally amazing - wish I had the patience to sit down and create like that.

That is true to an extent, Ac. But all dedicated artists pride themselves on a certain degree of realism. Even in art, the subjects must obey the laws of physics...unless you're talking Dali or Picasso or something. Or wild fantasy or science fiction.

All art instruction teaches that an artist needs to focus on these things. No one is saying that the stuff we talked about is bad art. But people have a right to be critical, so long as they are not being crude or disrespectful. And no one was. The fact is that, in those couple of small items, that one artist botched the effort. It was probably just an honest mistake, or lack of experience. No biggie. But can't people comment on that? (Well, if you note the attitude of certain "white knights" on Balto Source, it is tantamount to a felony to offer a critical comment or analysis. But as stupid as that concept and attitude is, it is also dead wrong.) No harm was meant to the artists in question.

Oops! I see your point. I don't want to misrepresent myself as some kind of marketing agent. Maybe it would be best if a mod just locked the topic now.

ACTUALLY, I really like this topic. The fact that all (excluding Hecate) don't have accounts on AS, is all the more reason to show them here. How else will AS know about them unless they have a DA and seriously stalk the Balto tag. I think it's a good idea and encourage it to continue with more art work. Except with art from more DA or other non-AS artists. After all, I love Hecate's work, but since she's already on AS and so well respected as an artist, most if not all Balto fans probably know about her fan works already.

Resolved. I relent. I swear, I relent.

Sorry I wasn't specifically referring to your comment - more just a general statement. I see where you are coming from but I disagree, art is individual to everyone so one size doesn't fit all. Being kept within the confines of reality is in my opinion boring and you may as well take a photo instead of painting (I do take photos and enjoy that as well). People are welcome to express their opinions on the critical aspects and that is OK by me but likewise people should not be surprised if others then offer the same constructive feedback of said opinions.

To keep this thread on track the fur issue on the painting - I agree that something doesn't look right but can't quite place my finger on it - maybe it is too chuncky all over for Balto's form? I think that the general direction of the fur is OK as the wind is blowing from the background of the picture. The fur that we can see would be affected by a vortex of air passing either side of each character thus pulling it in both directions to the passing air.

I don't understand what you mean by Whiteknights?

And to add a picture to the mix, I very much like SnowWolf's art (she is one of the original members of TBL) although she is more on the fantasy side of things:
Image

She also made a whitewolf plush
