I'm not very good at reviews, but here I go. lol

Distributed by: Paramount Pictures
Directed by: Frank Tashlin
Produced by: Jerry Lewis
Release date:December 18th, 1960

Plot

Fellow, played by Jerry Lewis, is left with his stepmother, and her two sons, Maximilian and Rupert, when his father passed away. Fellow spends his days working for his step-family.

When Fellow's father died, he left a fortune for Fella. Because of this, Fella's father appears in his dreams and tries to tell him where the fortune is hidden, but always wakes up before his father can tell him. His step-family knows of this fortune, and his stepbrothers are out to find that fortune for themselves.

Meanwhile, his stepmother plans a ball for Princess Charming, who is in town, in hopes that she will marry one of her sons. Fella is not allowed to attend that ball, and is locked into his room. But his fairy godfather appears and casts a spell on Fella that made him handsome till only midnight. Fella gets a chance to dance with the princess, but then quickly has to leave when the clock strikes 12 leaving only a show behind.

When Fella arrived home, one of his brothers realized that he is the supposed prince, and ends up in a small scrap. In the process, the fortune was found hidden in a tree. Fella gave the money to his step-family, as he said he didn't want the money, he just wanted a family. His stepmother was ashamed, and ordered her sons to return the money to Fella.

The princess arrives with the shoe and, but Fella explains to her why they could never be together. But in the end, they lived happily ever after.

I watched this movie last night with my parents, and this film, to me, was boring. This movie is listed as a comedy, but the humor could very easily be counted on one hand. There are two scenes in this movie that bugged me. One was watching Fella walk down a long hallway turning off lights and singing something that couldn't be made out. Near the end of the movie, when the princess shows up, the camera was placed in front of the gates far away from them. And like what I stated previously, they were talking, but you really couldn't make out what was being said. Speaking of the end of the movie, I felt the ending was all of a sudden.

Overall, I would give this movie about 3/10.

Here are some clips:

If you want a great Jerry Lewis movie, the quintessential one is the original Nutty Professor (which Eddie Murphy very poorly cashed in on with his "remake"...with a story that is hardly a remake at all).

And in the case of Jerry Lewis' original (which he also directed), the professor himself is basically a reclusive nerd trying to find a way to "get the girl" and improve his image, which is MUCH more plausible, and far less offensive, than Eddie Murphy's rather more lame attempt to generate cheap laughs at the expense of overweight people (where, when HE portrays a professor, the character is trying to improve his weight problem and, thus, image).

Jerry Lewis, being a generally zany, slapstick kind of comedian, comes off a lot funnier and more believable. Even considering the fact that HIS movie was made in the early 60s! (And hey, man, it's full of dated, beatnick-style stuff...very hip. "It's, like, craaaaazy, maaan"!)! A lot of his other movies (whether he's alone or when he teams up, as he did so very often, with legendary Italian-American singer and actor Dean Martin) are perhaps too dated for most people in this community...having been released through the 50s and 60s.

Yeah, my dad says that he has been in better films. Though the title Nutty Professor sounds familiar.

The Nutty Professor is his most famous film ever. And it is signature Jerry Lewis.

I don't remember much of this movie, but I do remember having seen it as a kid as my parents like it. I'd have to re-watch to give my own opinion, but I'm not big on musicals. HOWEVER the Nutty Professor that JC mentioned, THAT I DO remember and was a REALLY good movie. xD

Aah, validation. Moochas graceeas!

And now, time to be totally random with a fan remix of a classic Nutty Professor scene, with some period-appropriate music laid over the clip. Ha ha! Jerry Lewis shows his moves, and his canny knack for clownish body language for maximum hilarity! One of the first nerds ever shown on the big screen, if not THE first!

Okay, yeah...totally random. And I may be hijacking Mighty's topic. But it had to be done. lol I am sure she'll forgive me. *Snicker snicker*

Aah, vindication. Grazie!

You know, what strikes me as making Jerry Lewis such a great comedic actor (even though his acting style, when done more subtlely as he occasionally will do) is that physical comedy and hilarious facial expressions he was so very good at. Almost without equal. I can only think of certain comedy/slapstick actors who could measure up:

Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean)

Curly Howard, Moe Howard, Shemp Howard and Larry Fine (the Three Stooges)

Tim Conway (whose hilarious sketches and improvisation on the Carol Burnett Show are legendary)

Benny Hill

John Cleese, Michael Palin and Terry Jones (from the Monty Python troupe)

Carol Burnett

Lucy Ball

Jim Carrey

Steve Martin

Lou Costello

Stan Laurel

Art Carney

Foster Brooks

Ruth Buzzi

There may be some others through television and movie history...but these immediately spring to mind. The clownish greats of cinema!

^ Oh laws I love so many of those! Monty Python crew, Jim Carrey, Stooges, Tim Conway, Carol Burnett, and Steve Martin especially! And what no Marx Brothers?

De nada. x3

And great video! I can just hear that stuffed shirt's thoughts: "THE LEVEL OF ORTHODOX ON THIS IS MUST UN!"

( Sorry for encouraging him, Mighty. ^^; )

I know there will be those who think of me as a heretic for saying this, but I was never a fan of the Marx Brothers, and never really found them particularly funny. Maybe Groucho, to some extent. But I never thought he was a clown the way the others were. I always thought he was trying to mish-mosh too much slapstick, facial expressions (especially his signature eye rolls and eyebrow wiggles) and then attempts at highbrow zingers that just end up as snarky weirdness, and really not even very funny (to me, anyway). Quotable, maybe. Funny? Meh. And as to Chico and Harpo? Nope...they just never did it for me. The other slapstick legends (the Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and Charlie Chaplin) surpassed them in physical and generally comedic styling.

But I am pleased to find someone else who knows these other greats I listed!
