He does wave it around and is strong enough too handle it (swords of that type are HEAVEY) but do you think he can use it with any skill?
In P&L he cuts a radio mike in several bits with a series of controlled strokes and he does decend from I presume from Spain which has strong fencing history.
Then I'm not suprised he doesn't use it much, unlike modern pirates who capture people he's more like BlackBeard who gave a show of extream force and made it clear if all booty was given up little else would happen... which beleave it or not was usually the case. It woeked untill Baloo came into the picture and he started doing crazy stuff.

I'm one of the type of people that believe that Karnage's origin is from somewhere in a place that is similar to Spain. I hear him speak more Spanish than Italian but it's not impossible to think that he could have a family background that also has its roots from a place similar to Italy.

I say somewhere similar to Spain because I don't think the Talespin world is not like our earth and they may have cultures that we clearly recognize but the cultures and the countries origin for it is not under the same name. Like the country of Panda-La is based on the Chinese and Hounsland from the Talespin comics is clearly based on Germany.

Oh, and to answer your question, he is very skilled with a sword. It's been proven on an episode of Raw Toonage that aired in the early 90s. He fought Captain Hook. Here's the fight on this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9ViofjxzEA

Watch 6:45 to 8:10.

I see this as very sad since I think if Karnage would have had opponents that challenged his sword skill rather than his aviator skill as we see all the time and had the creative team for Talespin have focused on other parts of the Talespin world that didn't involved airplanes, I think Talespin would have had a bigger fanbase that would have wanted to keep Talespin alive rather than let the franchise sit in limbo like it is doing now.

Will do.

I agree on all. Though I admit the last thing I'd do is fight Karnage mano-a-mano on his terms.

I think Karnage primarily has his sword so he can just look cool and further get into the role of being a pirate, but I DO think he would use it to defend himself if threatened ;)

Just like many real ones from history who despite the legends were keen too avoid violence if possible, heck even Karnage avoided it with most... save Baloo.

He fought his uncle Garbago once and won so either he is uncle is bad at the sword or let him win. He lose to Capt Hook.
