It seems to me that many of the AS members seem to be afraid to go out of their comfort zones to make something original when it comes to designs. But I shouldn't be surprised. Kudos to the those of you who do make original designs!

A lot of designs, not all, look like Balto, Jenna, Aleu or Kodi. I don't know about you guys, but seeing characters that look like characters from the film is just down right BORING. There is NOTHING original about that, it just makes you look lazy. When I see these characters pop up I think "ugh".

Instead of cloning Balto characters, get out there and realize that Huskies can have different markings other than what you see in the movies.

Here are some examples:

Image
This Husky puppy has a tan head, grey spots around its eyes and a grey stripe going up its head. That is something you don't see in the movies.

I must say, I'm not sure I've seen a Husky with facial markings like this one, but this would also make for an original character design.

But it just doesn't go for the face, it goes for the body as well.

Image

This Husky just doesn't have a solid coat pattern like in the movies, it has many markings. Something like this would be far more interesting.

Now this one is very interesting. This would make for a great design idea.

So kiddies, realize that cloning Balto characters is boring and unoriginal. Don't be afraid to explore new things and come up with something new and original. And by that, I don't mean go and make some glowing green creature thing.

I couldn't agree more, how much fun could it possibly be to make a character who looks the same as every other character ever? It's fun to experiment with different markings and colors, you don't need to even use unnatural colors, REAL dogs can have some amazing outcomes!

Huskies alone have so many design possibilities, no two are ever the same(unless they're identical twins I suppose), and that's just huskies.

Definitely +1 support for this topic, I have lots of feels for these kinds of things.

YES. Definitely. Not to mention that when they just trace (or just color, in terms if blanks) the Balto characters, they have not only the same markings, but the same build, as well, making them even LESS original.

Now, I do think that when making Balo fancharacters, they should keep the design simple. I have seen fancharacters that on their own would be considered realistic, but their coat patterns were about 10x more complex than any of the actual Balto characters...making them really stand out in that particular universe, and not in a good way. :/

So anyways, YES. Get a little more creative on your markings (and builds), but when comes to fancharacters, don't go overboard! Make sure it fits the universe!

You're right of course, but then most members are young teenagers who just seem to want to get something up on Balto Source either because they can, or because they want to do these silly mates/packs/adoptions things, and don't really have any interest in developing something interesting and unique, let alone terribly creative. They may not even have the necessary talent to achieve it.

There are several really GOOD artists and writers on this site...they really ought to work on looking at what they've done as inspiration (and not simply to copy off of them). And, of course, they shouldn't resort to sparkle dogs or unrealistic things...and that would include canines posing and acting like humans, or with some human/canine hybrid body. That's still all unbelievably stupid as far as I am concerned.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! I see like 10 Balto and Jenna clones a day, and it's very annoying, however if the character has a REALLY good bio I might cut them some slack because at least they deeply thought about the personality and history of their character. Still, if people need help designing, others can help if designing isn't their "forte".

I couldn't agree more. There are so many colours and patterns for huskies! Sure white and red/black/silver coat is the most popular, but gosh, even those colours can have some more interesting markings than just being a Jenna clone!
Here are just a few examples of what can be done.
http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en ... 18941.html - Agouti husky
http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en ... 37172.html - Saddleback husky
http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en ... display=18 - A few variations of reddish huskies
http://www.animationsource.org/balto/en ... display=18 - Several wolf, German Shepherd and Husky patterns.

See? It doesn't hurt to look at some photos and make something realistic AND original.
